• College ward councillor Laine Johnson has an idea for the City’s exploding rat population problem: the ‘pill’.
• 
  Johnson wants Health Canada to approve a new contraceptive product that has been used in the United States. The product doesn’t kill the vermin but prevents new baby rats from being born.
   
• ‘It’s delicious and very sweet, so the rats are attracted to it as they would be anything else, but what’s kind of neat about this particular product is the rats don't die afterwards’. 
• Johnson will be bringing the idea to City Council, which she hopes will endorse the idea.

• Before Darren And Martha’s epic road trip from Toronto to Vancouver two summers ago, neither one of us had heard of Haskap berries (if you’re not familiar, they look like stretched-out blueberries, and they’re quite yummy). We hunted for them in the Prairies, finally sourcing a package of frozen berries in a Moose Jaw natural foods store (to be fair, we were searching for them after the season had ended). Now it seems they’re everywhere. Get fresh, certified organic Haskaps at Wakefield’s Ferme Juniper Farm this weekend.

🎶 Rideau Street

• Concert venue operator LiveNation has leased the former Chapters store on Rideau Street. Now owned by the National Capital Commission, the store has been empty since Chapters moved into the the Rideau Centre in 2022. LiveNation says the venue will open in 2025 after extensive renovations. (William Eltherington at CTV)
  
  ➕ Related The National Capital Commission has bought the building at 148-152 Sparks Street. The three storey structure has offices upstairs but is mostly recognizable by the Nate’s Deli on the ground floor. Although the Commission has long had a policy of acquiring buildings near Parliament as they come available, this purchase has caused some controversy as one of the sellers is a close friend to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Tom Pitfield.
  
  ➕ Related The City’s Built Heritage Committee has turned down a request by the Hudson’s Bay Company to retract a heritage designation of its Rideau Street store. The Company feels that the designation will lower the building’s sale value. City Council will make the final approval, or not, of new heritage designations – including The Bay’s – at an upcoming meeting.

🚨 Ottawa Police Service

• An Ottawa Police Service constable has been demoted for 14 months after pleading guilty to criminal charges of drunk driving. Constable Umer Khan was arrested at gunpoint in Gatineau after a high speed chase where the off-duty officer was found to have double the legal limit of alcohol in his blood. He received one year of probation and a $1,000 fine. The new demotion is under the Police Act, where Khan for discreditable conduct. (Marlo Glass in the Ottawa Citizen)

🔥 City of Ottawa

• The City has appointed Ryan Perrault as the new General Manager of Emergency and Protective Services. Perrault is currently the Interim GM of Strategic Initiatives and will continue in that position until a replacement is hired. (Ottawa Bulldog)
