🎓 Algonquin College - Algonquin College has proposed dropping its hairstyling and esthetician programmes. The College says that this is to ensure the best use of its resources, a hairstyling and esthetician professor says that it means ‘the end of programs that are female-dominated and in high demand’. 🏳️🌈 Refugees - Capital Rainbow Refuge has announced Rainbow House, a new residence for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender refugee claimants. 🚨 Ottawa Police Service - The Ottawa constable convicted of assaulting a man by stepping on his neck for two minutes now has Police Services Act charges. Under the Police Services Act, constable Goran Beric has been charged with two counts of insubordination and three counts of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act. In the criminal case, Beric did not serve jail time and was given a 30 month probation. (Kristy Nease at CBC)
🏊♀️ Olympics - Eighteen year-old Julie Brousseau has been chosen for Team Canada in the Paris Olympics. This will be the first Olympics for the swimmer, who was selected based on her performance at the 2024 Olympic & Paralympic Swimming Trials last week. (Natasha O’Neill at CityNews)

Toronto-based Courage Cookies was started by Chelsea Hearty and Ian Moores, a pair of Ottawa-born friends, back in the darkest, early-pandemic days of 2020. This weekend they’re bringing their success back home by opening their new location at 1130 Wellington West. But this isn’t just a feel good story about locals done good: a portion of the overall revenue of each cookie is donated to a worthy organization (determined by the recipient’s good will, credentials, transparency, effectiveness, and whether or not they have minimal administrative fees).
