HELLO OTTAWA

🚊 NO Train: Day 1️⃣4️⃣

Here are today’s updates on the closure of the Confederation Line.

  •  As we mentioned in the special update Friday, the O Train will not – and did not – return to service today. OC Transpo expects it will stay closed until at least August 10. (Josh Pringle at CTV)
  •  A Rail Replacement shuttle bus has started today at Blair Station with stops on the Mackenzie King Bridge, and along Albert Street at Bank and Kent streets in the morning rush hour. From 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, it will leave from the Slater Street stops at Bank and Kent streets, along with the Mackenzie King Bridge, for the eastbound afternoon commute to Blair. (CBC)
  •  OC Transpo should provide free transit to compensate riders of the closure say some City councillors. (Josh Pringle at CTV)
  •  Just to put things in perspective. Montréal opened its new 67km, 26 station Réseau Express Métropolitain last Saturday. It’s completely automated, entirely electric, includes air conditioned carriages, Wi-Fi, and USB ports, and took only eight years from conception to opening. (The Canadian Press)

Related The Express is privately owned by Quebec’s public pension manager. Caisse de dépôt wants to pitch for the Québec – Windsor high frequency line.

🛻 Convoy News

  •  The Convoy organizers who may face a $300 million class action suit want it thrown out. The twelve named in the potential suit say the class action is a violation of their Charter rights and it should be tossed for infringing upon freedom of expression. The lawyer organizing the action says there are 15,000 in the class who were wronged by the Convoy occupation. The hearing will be held in October.

Other potential defendents who were involved in the collection of donations for the Convoy want the hearing to be held in Toronto as they believe they cannot get a fair trial in Ottawa.

🗞️ Elegy

  •  Ewart Walters, the publisher of Ottawa’s Black newspaper The Spectrum, has died at age 93. The Order of Ottawa recipient was an advocate for the Black community his entire life, as well as working as a journalist for the Jamaica Gleaner, for the Jamaican High Commission, and a public servant with the Canadian Interntional Development Agency. Walters published The Spectrum between 1983 and 2013, but its roots began when, as a Carleton journalism student in the 1960s, he was editor of the students’ newspaper, The Charlatan. (Peter Szperling at CTV)
