| | DISTRICT OF SQUAMISH HOLIDAY HOURS | RECREATE RESPONSIBLY THIS HOLIDAY WEEKEND | The District is once again urging everyone to please do our part and recreate responsibly this July long weekend to keep our community safe and beautiful! If you are venturing into the great outdoors, please: - Know Your Limits: Be prepared and practice the BC AdventureSmart 3Ts: Trip Planning, Training and Taking the Essentials to reduce the risk and severity of Search and Rescue calls.
- Respect Wildlife: Leaving food and garbage unsecured will attract bears and other wild animals. This is dangerous for you and puts the bears at risk too. Never keep or consume food in your tent. Keep your dogs on a leash while out on the trails.
- Leave No Trace: Ensure proper disposal of human waste and toilet paper. Dig a hole to bury both waste and paper if washroom facilities are unavailable. Please don’t pollute waterways, beaches or trails. Pack in what you pack out.
- Be FireSmart: Category 2 and Category 3 fires are currently banned in addition to fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description, binary exploding targets, air curtain burners, tiki and similar kinds of torches; and chimineas. Lighting a fire in any public space such as riverbanks, parks and beaches is strictly prohibited within the District of Squamish boundaries.
- Use Designated Facilities: With over 700 campsites in Squamish, visitors can find access to amenities including washroom facilities, and bearproof garbage facilities.
- Share The Trails: We all love being outdoors, so please be courteous and friendly to each other, give space on the trails and if in doubt let the other person go first. Keep music to yourself to enjoy.
| ALL AGES AND ABILITIES TRANSPORTATION ROUTE STUDY ON LET’S TALK SQUAMISH | The District of Squamish is exploring options for an all ages and abilities (AAA) bike route from downtown to Brackendale, on the west side of the highway. An AAA bike route is designed to meet the needs of more cyclists than a standard bike lane. It feels safe and comfortable for all users, including children, seniors, people with disabilities, and new riders. We need your input as we determine the best route, and to help identify which cycling facility types will make the route most comfortable for all riders. Please provide your input by taking our survey or showing us where you need to get to using the mapping tool. The toads are currently making their way to the forest to mature. Please give them the space they need in order to arrive safely. Please do not touch the toads as residue from your skin can harm them. | | Wildlife update: Garibaldi Highlands The Conservation Officer Service has received multiple reports of a sow and three yearlings accessing attractants in the Garibaldi Highlands neighbourhood, particularly around Paisley Place, Rhum and Eigg Drive, Portree Way, Perth Drive and Thunderbird Ridge. Three of the four bears are tagged and believed to be the same family unit previously relocated due to similar appearance and behaviour. Our best and only course of action is to eliminate attractants and discourage them from staying in our neighbourhoods. View what residents must do to help | Coyote sightings at Brennan Park Recreation Centre Caution signs have been installed at Brennan Park Recreation Centre to warn the public of a coyote in the area. Please keep children close to adult supervision when on the centre grounds, and staff are asking that dogs are not left tied up outside. If you encounter a coyote, make yourself appear large, maintain eye contact and speak or shout in a low, firm voice. If the coyote is aggressive and pursues you, do not turn your back or run. Throw rocks and arm yourself with a stick. Pick up any small children and back away slowly. NEVER approach and NEVER feed wild animals. Report coyote sightings to the Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-RAPP (7277). | | INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS | Pioneer Way Phase 2 Work from Discovery Way to Aspen Road resumes this week.
