Many old movies have jokes about people buying tickets to the ‘Policeman’s Ball’ to curry favour with the local constables.

But not the the Ottawa Police Service. It’s looking for people to receive the money it hopes to raise through its 13th Annual Gala. Last year, $59,000 was raised for The Roberts Smart Centre and The Door Youth Centre.

Recipients must be a registered charity and provide services to Ottawa. If you have a good suggestion, let the Police know here. The deadline is March 31.

As for tickets to the ball, ask your local police officer.

• – The late Toller Cranston was a Canadian skating star who went on to have a prolific career as an artist and illustrator. When he died suddenly his sister, author and filmmaker Phillippa Cranston Baron, decided to write her brother’s biography.

🇨🇦 Brian Mulroney

•  Flags at all City facilities, as well as all Federal facilities, are at half-mast today in honour of Brian Mulroney, the 18th Prime Minister, who died yesterday. Flags will remain lowered until sunset of the day of his funeral, as yet undetermined. (City of Ottawa)

📱 ArriveCAN Vaccine Passport App

•  The Federal government has suspended all contracts with the developer of the ArriveCAN app. Dalian Enterprises, a two-person software company in Ottawa, has received over $200 million in government contracts since 2015. This week it was discovered that chief executive David Yeo is a an employee of the Department of National Defence, although he has also now been suspended. (Darren Major at CBC)

🚀 Canadarm

•  The spacecraft laboratory that built the Canadarm for the International Space Station is closing. The Canada Space Agency says the David Florida Laboratory in the Shirley's Bay complex off Carling Avenue will closed in March 2025. The Laboratory has operated since 1972. (CBC)

🏫 Holy Trinity Catholic High School

•  Holy Trinity Catholic High School was closed this morning after it received a threatening email. The Ottawa Catholic School Board said the email indicated a threat to the Kanata school premises. In cases like this, grade 7 and 8 students are moved to an evacuation site where they can be picked up by parents.
