Did you take our quiz on stalls and spins?

Every year, a number of pilots lose their lives due to stalls or spins mainly during takeoff or landing. Stalls can occur in all phases of flight, but are particularly fatal on takeoff and during the final turn. We published an article in the November-December 2021 issue that covers the dangers of the base-to-final turn; the most dangerous turn depending on the strength and direction of the winds.

Please take the time to take the attached short test on dropouts before reading this article. This will give you an idea of how much knowledge you have of stalls and it will refresh them a bit.

NAV Canada - ADS-B testing below flight level 290

On December 10, NAV Canada began testing satellite ADS-B in the lower airspace within the Montreal Flight Information Region. Nolinor, Air Inuit and PAL Airlines were among the first customers to benefit from surveillance services in areas of Canada without radar coverage. The continued and expanded use of satellite ADS-B makes new regions of airspace visible, thereby improving flight safety and efficiency.

This test will be used to evaluate the general performance of the system, as well as the effectiveness of satellite ADS-B under conditions where aircraft are required to have the capability to transmit to receivers in space (e.g. (e.g. antenna diversity). Belly transponders are not enough. In order for ADS-B satellite receivers to receive a reliable signal, an antenna is needed that transmits the signal to the satellites.

December 1927: first airmail flight in Canada

On December 20, 1927, Romeo Vachon parachuted from a Fairchild a small mail bag that history records as the first delivery of mail by parachute in Canada. Then on Christmas Day, he dropped - but without a parachute - mail over the North Shore. It was the beginning of airmail deliveries to Canada.

On December 17, 1954, Roméo Vachon passed away. In 1969, the Aeronautics and Space Institute of Canada created the “Roméo Vachon” prize in memory of the pilot. This award recognizes ingenious achievements in aeronautical and space activities in Canada. Roméo Vachon will finally receive a last posthumous tribute in 1974 with his nomination to the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame.

Where is Zara at?

On August 18, Zara Rutherford, a 19-year-old British girl from Belgium, embarked on a solo trip around the world with an ultra-light aircraft of the advanced type, a Shark Aero 080 in composite material. If she succeeds, she will become the youngest woman in the world to accomplish it and earn a Guinness Record. With this flight, she wants to encourage girls and young women to pursue their dreams.

Its stopover at Saint-Hubert airport on August 25 was the subject of a  report by our collaborator Jean-Pierre Bonin.

Today, December 22, she has reached Jakarta, Indonesia. You can follow her journey on the flyzolo.com website .

Well done to this young lady and we wish her good flight and success in the continuation of this extraordinary journey.

Renewal of category 4 medical certificates

Transport Canada announces a change in the procedure for requesting or updating a Category 4 medical certificate. Essentially, the change clarifies that the offices responsible for administering these requests are the regional offices and not the national office. This change is currently in effect and will be published in the Aeronautical Information Manual the next time it is published on March 22, 2022. Here is the text explaining the procedure to be followed.

Physical and mental fitness for a Category 4 medical certificate is established by completing Form No. 26-0297, Medical Declaration for Licenses and Permits Requiring a Category 4 Medical Standard. A reminder that to be able to take advantage of a category 4 medical certificate, you must not have any medical conditions that are listed on this form.

This document (26-0297) is available HERE .

It is recommended that pilots submit a Category 4 medical certificate request by email to their appropriate regional service center whose email addresses can be found by clicking HERE . Medical reports should be sent to the regional service center and not to Civil Aviation Medicine to avoid unnecessary delays. Transport Canada undertakes to respond within 60 days of receiving the request.

The age of the applicant and the type of permit or license applied for determines the frequency of medical examinations necessary to meet physical and mental fitness requirements. The period of validity of a medical certificate is calculated from the first day of the month following the date of the medical examination or medical declaration.

We also learned from Transport Canada that the 90-day exemptions for logbook signatures will be extended in January 2022. So, no worries, your logbook is still valid even if you haven't received the logbook. label.Likewise, those who have a carnet that expires, the exemptions will be renewed as well. Transport Canada is expected to rule on the new deadlines shortly.
