HELLO OTTAWA

Sorry, the Best of Ottawa voting will begin tomorrow not today. It’s a combination of having so many more nominations this year and the laptop we were working on dying at a crucial junction. That junction then made a turn for gins and tonic made with local distillery nominee Uh uh, no cheating (we don”t want to influence the vote) and by then it was very late.

We’ve added a new addition to our continually curated list of locally made podcasts. It’s NAC Insights, ‘a series of thought-provoking discussions by leaders in arts, medicine, and technology’ by the National Arts Centre. The latest episode is Dr. Jillian Horton in Conversation with Shelagh Rogers.

We’ve also added a new brewery to our Ottawa – Gatineau Craft Brewery Map. It’s Bancroft Brewing Co. in downtown Bancroft, located at the very edge of our parish but if we don’t take ownership of that area, who will?

And, finally, regarding yesterday’s item about legionellosis in the water at Ottawa Hospital, a retired physician reader with a degree in microbiology notes ‘Legionnaire’s Disease is caused by the Legionella bacteria. Legionellosis is a spectrum of different diseases caused by Legionella. Legionnaire’s Disease is a type of legionellosis.’ Don’t drink the water.

  • 50
  • – The number of new drivers that the Ottawa School Transportation Authority requires in order to provide adequate service. This is an improvement, as last week the Authority said it was short 71 drivers. In a change of attitude towards parents, the Authority now says it will advise on the 15th and the 30th of each month which routes will be cancelled.  (Ted Raymond at CTV

Quote

  • People know how to call taxis

  • Ken Gray in Ottawa Bulldog. Gray is incensed at the falling standards and poor funding of the Ottawa Ambulance Service which announced that paramedics may call a taxi to take a patient somewhere other than a hospital rather than an ambulance.  (Alistair Steele at CBC)

📋 Agenda

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🏠 Downtown Buildings

  •  A report to the City’s planning and housing committee is recommending ways to ease conversions of office buildings into residential. The report recommends cutting fees to developers, waiving the transportation impact assessment, and changing zoning which has different setback rules for office and apartment buildings. (Arthur White-Crummey at CBC) (The Report)

🌳 Greenbelt

  •  The Province is reversing the expansion of Ottawa’s urban area into the greenbelt. Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Paul Calandra says that the land use changes to the east, south, and west of Ottawa that were unilaterally opened to development would be reversed because the decision was not made under the usual processes. The reversal had previously been made for Toronto and will also apply to Barrie, Belleville, Guelph, Hamilton, and Peterborough. (Allison Jones and Liam Casey in the Canadian Press)

🚨 Ottawa Police Service Board

  •  The Ottawa Police Service Board denies that it is restricting freedom of speech at its public meetings because it doesn’t need to consult the public at all. In its Statement of Defence to a Small Claims Court lawsuit launched by six community groups, the Board notes that it is not required to consult with the public so any restrictions are fair. The Board created new restrictions this year such as submitting comments in advance, not permitting the converstion to expand from those comments, and a one hour time limit on public delegations. (Marlo Glass in the Ottawa Citizen)

DEALS OF THE DAY

There are big savings in limited sizes and colours at Sophie Grace right now. For example, if you choose the Royal or Oxford Blue, Modern Purple, or Desert colour ways, the high neck tank is $35.

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

We hadn’t heard from our friends at NarCity Ottawa for awhile but the masters of the motivational headline have returned with a doozy: ‘7 Enchanting Small Towns Near Ottawa That Are Like Stepping Into Stars Hollow’.

That headline is also a perfect example of using a phrase to attract readers from an in-group or turn away an undesired audience. Stars Hollow is the setting of the TV show, Gilmour Girls. If you caught that you are NarCity material, if not, thank you for subscribing to the ottawan.

The seven towns are: Almonte, Carleton Place, Chelsea, Merrickville, Perth, Wakefield, and Westport. Now that we know about it, the ottawan would add Bancroft to the list.
