HELLO OTTAWA

The House of PainT is in jeopardy and needs financial support.

This year‘s 20th Anniversary Festival celebrating and elevating hip hop was curtailed in August due to flooding and an event that normally draws thousands saw hundreds instead.

To return in 2024, House of PainT is hoping to raise $20,000. You can help the young artists here.

⚕️ University of Ottawa

  •  University of Ottawa resident doctor suspended for social media posts on the Israel – Hamas conflict. Without naming the doctor, the Faculty of Medicine says a person was suspended for violating the College of Phsysicians and Surgeons of Ontario’s professional standards. People who say that the doctor was censored for his pro-Palestine views have launched a petition. Someone else who accuses the doctor of anti-semitism has captured his Instagram posts in an article here. (William Eltherington at CTV)

🚲 Percy Street underpass

  •   Neighbours in Centreville hope that an underpass closure to cars will become permanent. The underpass at Percy Street and the Queensway has been pedestrian and cycle-only since the bridge was replaced in October. Resident Jamie says of the increased number of cyclists, ‘If you make a street safer to bike on, more people will bike on it’. (Alayne McGregor in Centretown Buzz)

🪚 Ottawa International Airport

  •  The Ottawa International Airport will start clear cutting a forest on Hunt Club road. The four hectares at 400 Hunt Club Rd is made up of deliberately planted red pine intended for use as telephone poles, The airport says the trees must be removed for the safety of the plot as it has been neglected over the years. There are no safety concerns over airport operations. (Nicole Williams at CBC)

💰 Tourism Growth Program

  •  FedDev Ontario has a few million dollars to spread around on tourist development in the region. Eligible businesses – anything supporting tourism except restaurants and hotels really – can apply for no-interest loans, or if they are non-profit, no payback loans. (Ottawa Festivals)

  •  The Ottawa Fringe Festival in partnership with Playwrights Guild of Canada presents New Play Tuesday - Play Connect Reading, taking place during undercurrents festival (February 7-17 2024). Submit a French or English play of up to 90 minutes for the chance to have it performed at a reading. The deadline to apply is December 1.
     
  •  It’s also time to apply to perform at the 2024 Ottawa Jazz Festival. Musicians in Ottawa and Gatineau are invited to apply by January 15, 2024.

As Ottawa Bulldog puts it, ‘one of the greatest love affairs in pop music history was that of folksinger Joni Mitchell and Graham Nash of the Hollies’.

‘The two iconic musicians first crossed paths when The Hollies performed in Ottawa. After the show, they got acquainted, and Mitchell played some of her material to Nash, immediately capturing his attention. He once described the evening as “magical on so many different levels” and revealed she treated him to 15 pieces from her songbook.’
