đĽ Student News - The Studentsâ Union at the University of Ottawa had a seven hour meeting over two contentious issues.
The first issue: somehow, the Studentsâ Union managed to appoint too many members to its board of directors, contrary to Ontario not-for-profit law. In this case, too many meant five. But you cannot live in this capital city without learning a few tricks and the Union decided to reclassify the errant directors as advisors. Problem solved. The second issue: some students felt that the Studentsâ Union wanted to restrict directors from speaking freely and made a âfreedom of speechâ proposal. The advocacy commissioner on the executive committee was leery, saying that freedom of expression includes âthings that are very, very harmfulâ. A version of the proposal was passed.
