OTTAWA HISTORIC LOGO T-SHIRTS

Ogilvy’s T-Shirt

Charles Ogilvy Limited began as dry goods shop on Rideau Street in 1897, and ended its reign as Ottawa's greatest department store in 1992.

Help support the ottawan by buying one of our historic logo t-shirts.

OTTAWA STATS

Number

  • $110 million
  • – The amount of money approved by the planning and housing committee today for three years of affordable housing projects. All the money is for not-for-profit agencies who will actually provide the housing, although some of the funds will instead pay for social services provided by the organizations. The $110 million also includes money provided by the Provincial and Federal governments.  City Council will still need to approve the spend. (Giacomo Panico at CBC)

Ottawan of the Day

  • James W. Cook
  • – The artist travels from his Vanier home to create sand scuptures at festivals worldwide. (Samuel Wat at CBC)

Quote

  • We are worried such significant amount of funds are going to a new start-up event as opposed to support for existing legacy
  • – Canadian Tulip Festival executive director Jo Riding on Ottawa Tourism muscling in on its business with the new Ottawa May in Bloom Festivities. Ottawa Tourism is spending $600,000 over three years on the new flower fest. (Jackie Perez at CTV)

CITY HALL AGENDA

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

😷 Masking

  •  The Ottawa Hospital will require masks in all clinical areas and waiting rooms starting next Monday. Masks will not be mandatory in hallways and cafeterias. The Hospital has tightened the rules due to a recent uptick in deaths by COVID 19 in Ottawa, and the expectation that a new variant will arrive in the autumn. Queensway Carleton Hospital made the same changes last week. (Elizabeth Payne in the Ottawa Citizen)

🏫 Ottawa Carleton District School Board

  •  Some parents are arging that if the Board cannot supply buses for its students, maybe it should reopen a rural school that it closed. Kids used to walk to the Munster Elementary School in the village of Munster before it was closed in 2015. The school board has already said that it doesn’t want to reopen the school. (Natalia Goodwin at CBC)

✈️ Ottawa International Airport

  •  WestJet has reversed ferret and will keep flying non-stop flights between Ottawa and Winnipeg. The airline had previously planned to stop the non-stops October 29. From December 18, WestJet will offer four flights weekly. (Chris D)

💤 Zellers

  •  Zeller’s will be launching its next popup at Bayshore Shopping Centre. In fact, Zeller’s will be popping up at all Hudson’s Bay stores that don’t already have one by September 22. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

🚨  Ottawa Police Service

  •  Civil rights campaigners are launching a Charter Rights challenge against the Ottawa Police Service over rules limiting public speaking. Earlier this year, the Police Service Board made new rules for people who wished to speak at its public meetings. These included supplying questions in advance, restricting speakers from expanding their topics, and a rule that speakers must not be disrespectful. The challenge is being brought forward by 613-819 Black Hub, Black Student Leader’s Association, and Horizon Ottawa amongst others. (Luke LeBrun in Press Progress)

➕ Related Horizon Ottawa is challenging a judicial review for an audit over the last civic election. A former executive with developer Taggart asked the City to have the election compliance audit committee audit Horizon over its HorizonFest, a free festival in which some candidates appeared. The audit committee agreed with the executive that the festival was not ‘properly categorized’ on Horizon’s financial statement.

👑 Governor General

  •  New Edinburgh resident Mary Simon, the Governor General, will meet with Kitchissippi resident Mayor Mark Sutcliffe this morning.  Simon will ‘learn about his vision for the city, as well as discuss salient issues currently facing Ottawa’. (Governor General)

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Ken Rubin in the Ottawa Citizen has the the bonkers story of when the National Capital Commission wanted to market Ottawa as a ‘wild city’. Way back in – checks notes – 2021, the Commission hired consultants MediaPlus, who created two sizzle reel videos. You cannot start your weekend without watching them.
