| | 🦟 West Nile Virus - Move over Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus, the West Nile virus has been found in Ottawa mosquitoes. No human so far has contracted it this year but Ottawa Public Health warns to guard against mosquitoes, both with bug spray and to drain any still water you find outside your home. 🚧 Pedestrianizing Streets - Some City councillors want Ottawa to emulate Montréal’s pedestrianized streets. Councillors from Capital ward, Shawn Menard (Not Mendez! Not Mendez), Somerset ward, Ariel Troster, and Knoxdale-Merivale ward, Sean Devine, observe that Montréal’s closed summer streets are full of life compared to our avenues. 🐕 Deschênes Rapids - A dog and his man were saved by Ottawa firefighters in the middle of Deschênes Rapids yesterday. The two were in a boat that got stuck on the rocks. Firefighters went out on their own boat and retrieved the castaways. Both dog and man were wearing floatation devices. (CBC)
🐍 American eels - Ottawa Riverkeeper wants Hydro Québec to build an eel ladder at its Carillon dam. The Carillon hydroelectric dam is undergoing a $750 million refurbishment, which is an opportunity to help out the eels by building a ladder. The American eel is at imminent risk of extinction, mostly due to habitat changes. As we have previously reported, American eels swim down the Ottawa River, into the St Lawrence, then 4,000 km into the Sargasso Sea to breed. Hydro Québec doesn’t want to do it.
