- After 12 years of writing about restaurants, Peter Hum in the Ottawa Citizen says the Med Supper Club is his most expensive review ever. However, Hum quotes his dining guest as saying, ‘I just don’t see it blowing foodies’ minds’.
- Ameya Charnalia at Eat The Strip has found a back-to-basics Haitian restaurant in Vanier, Soleil des Iles. Charnalia loved the resto’s version of Haiti’s national dish, Griot – made with pork shoulder marinated in citrus, braised, and then fried.
- A Milano Pizzeria on St Laurent Boulevard was vandalized with swastikas, the N-word, and Ku Klux Klan white supremacist symbols spray painted on the walls.
- Kiersten Vuorimaki in Apt 613’s Best Bites column visited La Bottega Nicastro (‘Ottawa celebrity chef Rene Rodriguez (Top Chef Canada, Beat Bobby Flay, Iron Chef Canada) took over the bustling trattoria this spring’), Mr. Señor (‘while there are zero misses (including the massive breakfast burrito on Sundays) the birria tacos are such a rare treat to find that they have to be mentioned’), and Sweet N Salad (‘The topping selection is a bit unconventional (no pork products, or caesar dressing here) but everything was super fresh and delicious’).

Air Canada is planning on reinstating the route, which was cancelled after the COVID-19 lockdowns. Currently, the only flight to Europe is an Air France Paris-Ottawa route. 🌈 Capital Pride - The Jewish Federation of Ottawa has withdrawn from the Pride parade following Capital Pride’s ‘Statement in solidarity with Palestine’. The Federation said that it met with the co-chairs of Capital Pride to ‘address our serious concerns about their recent antisemitic statement’ but ultimately Pride’s board refused to revise its stance. 🐈 Once is nothing, two is coincidence, three is a trend - Missing from Ottawa for a year, Birdie the cat has been found in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Birdie was brought in to a local SPCA by woman who had been feeding her for six months, which used the cat’s microchip to track down her owners. An Ottawa resident who is visiting family in Fredericton will Birdie back with her. the ottawan is baffled by this burst of long distance newly found pets, noting Indie the cat in Montréal and Teddy the poodle in Wyoming. East Coast Experience officially opens the 180th Vankleek Fair tonight. The fair’s theme is "Country Roots and Cowboy Boots", and visitors will see horse, cow, and sheep demos; a Cowboy Race (Saturday), a monster truck show, pulling demos, and of course, a midway. The fair runs 'til Sunday (August 18). Advance tickets are on sale until Wednesday August 14 for $20. Gate admission is $55 for a weekend pass or $25 per person. -
Many of the historic military machines at the Canadian War Museum are in working order, and you’ll see demos this weekend as part of the admission fee. -
