HELLO OTTAWA

🚊 NO Train: Day 0️⃣

Here are today’s updates on the closure of the Confederation Line.

•  The Confederation Line is running again. During morning rush house, 11 single carriages will serve all stations every five minutes, in the afternoon, it’s every four minutes. Otherwise, it is every six minutes. (City of Ottawa)
•  This configuration of the Confederation Line will continue into the Autumn, even after the transit schedules change from summer service on August 27. (Ted Raymond and Josh Pringle at CTV).
•  OC Transpo has cancelled the R1 Rail Replacement bus as of tomorrow. However, a shuttle bus will run from Tunney’s Pasture and Blair stations to the Mackenzie King Bridge and Albert Street between 6:30 am and 9:00 am and the reverse from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. (Blair Crawford in the Ottawa Citizen)
•  Ottawa Transit Riders has run a poll over the cancellation of the R1 Rail Replacement bus that resulted in 88 per cent in favour of keeping it.

🚲 Queen Elizabeth Driveway

Kitchissippi resident Mayor Mark Sutcliffe’s desire to shame the National Capital Commission into returning cars to the Queen Elizabeth Driveway has had some comment over the weekend.

•  Nepean Member of Provincial Parliament Lisa MacLeod tweeted her support: ‘to stop the flow of trade and transport in this and other parts of Ottawa is unacceptable’.
  
  MacLeod seems unaware that commercial vehicles have always been prohibited from using the Queen Elizabeth Driveway.
•   The City’s own official plan, approved last November by the newly-elected Sutcliffe and the new council, says the City will: 
  
  ‘Re-imagine Queen Elizabeth Driveway and Colonel By Drive to reduce the roads’ importance as a commuter route in favour of pedestrian activity and greenspace connections with consideration of Canal crossings. This may include limiting vehicular access and reducing traffic speed’ [Section 6.6.2.2 1) f)]

🏆 Stanley Cup

•  The Stanley Cup will be in Carp this Friday. The Vegas Golden Knights’ strength and conditioning coach, Doug Davidson, was once a player in the West Carleton Minor Hockey Association and he’ll be showing off the Cup at the W. Erskine Johnston Arena on Friday between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. If you’d like to see it, bring a non-perishable food donation for the West Carleton Food Access Centre.   ➕ Related Michael Andlauer, the new owner of the Sens, is expected to take over at the end of the month or early September. Unfortunately, this related item is probably as close as the Sens will ever get to the Stanley Cup.

🤖 Garbage Collection

•  South Stormont will start using artificial intelligence for garbage pickup. South Stormont, near Cornwall, has contracted with a Saskatoon outfit that will use artificial intelligence to plan the best routes and times for the available trucks and traffic. (Ben Andrews at CBC)

🏘️ Real Estate

•  CTV has photos the ten most expensive houses for sale in Ottawa. The most expensive is $15 million (Josh Pringle at CTV)

✈️ Ottawa International Airport

•  Air North has opened a new refrigerated warehouse at Ottawa Airport. The new warehouse will double Air North’s capacity to ship food and goods to far north communities. (Madalyn Howitt in Nunatsiaq News)

🙏 Madonna House

•  The Ottawa Madonna House is to close after 50 years. Operated by the Madonna House Apostolate in Combermere,  Madonna houses are cellphone-free zones ‘where people can come to speak about God, be listened to and encounter God in the 24-hour, prayer and silence experience’. The two-person team who ran the house has retired to the Apostolate’s compound in Combermere. Hallowe’en trick or treaters who came by the house at 440 Kensington Avenue may remember being given holy cards in their sack. (Anna Farrow in the Catholic Register)
