Parks Canada completed a 6.5 hectare prescribed fire in the Shirley Lake area of Elk Island National Park. Fire operations took place between April 21 and May 14, 2026, in the northwest corner of the park.
Safety is always Parks Canada’s top priority. Following ignition, the area is monitored closely for several days until all hotspots are extinguished.
Already, the landscape is showing signs of renewal, with green growth emerging. This area provides important habitat for many plants and wildlife, including plains bison.
