HELLO OTTAWA

There probably will be no ottawan tomorrow.

We’re flying to Vancouver this evening, on Porter, natch, but the late arrival and the timezone difference may make putting together Wednesday’s newsletter pointless.

As for next week, on the non-stat holiday days between Christmas and New Year’s Day, we’ll be sending out our stripped-down mini-ottawans.

Nothing much is going on during that week, but what we know, you’ll know. We just won’t know much. Regular service will resume Tuesday, January 2.

In the meantime, we’ll see you Thursday at a minimum.

– Martha and Darren

OTTAWA HISTORIC LOGO T-SHIRTS

Ottawa Valley Ale T-Shirt

Long forgotten, but Ottawa’s first craft brewery was Ottawa Valley Ale, incorporated in 1985.

Help support the ottawan by buying one of our historic logo t-shirts.

It’s too late to order one for Christmas. Please do not try if you need delivery before Dec 22.

OTTAWA STATS

Number

  • $25,000
  • – The amount of money pledged by Dr Gail Beck for her son Timon Beck to release him from jail. Until last Thursday, Gail Beck was the chair of the Ottawa Police Services Board but resigned after Timon Beck was arrested for his alleged part in drug bust worth $4.5 million. The mother is standing as surety for the son, meaning she will guarantee good behaviour on his part and he will live under her roof for the duration of the case or she will be liable for the money. (Gary Dimmock in the Ottawa Citizen)

Ottawan of the Day

  • Rachel Homan
  • –  Homan won the women's title at the Grand Slam of Curling's WFG Masters with an 8-4 victory over Switzerland's Silvana Tirinzoni in Sunday's final.
  • (Martin Cleary in Ottawa Sports Pages)

Quote

  • Yeah, I think he did once, but he always called me ‘kid,’ ya know?

  • – An anonymous Manotick Business Improvement Area board member on the allegation that another board member often called chairperson Salima Ismail ‘little girl’. This story on the integrity commissioner’s investigation on the finances of the Manotick Business Improvement Area is so intriguing because the stakes are so small. (Joanne Laucius in the Ottawa Citizen

CITY HALL AGENDA

What’s going on at City Hall

Nothing more until the new year.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🏒 The Sens

  •  The Ottawa Senators have fired head coach DJ Smith. Smith had been head coach for the past four years, all of which saw the Sens out of the playoffs. He will be temporarily replaced by Jacques Martin, the winningest coach in Senators history. (Greg Wyshynski at ESPN)

⚕️ Safer Alternate Response

  •  Centretown Community Health Centre and Somerset West Community Health Centre have been selected to work with Ottawa Police on the mental health response unit. Starting next summer, a new emergency line will be set up to call for people in mental health distress. Rather than uniformed police, a crisis team may be dispatched. A similar trial in Toronto found that only 4 per cent of calls to the specialized team required a follow-up by police. (Koyuki Hayashi in the Ottawa Citizen)

🗞️  Canadian Press Newsmaker of the Year

  •  The Member of Parliament for Carleton, Pierre Poilievre, has been voted the Canadian Press Newsmaker of the Year. Poilievre was selected less for being an Ottawa MP and more for his other job, Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition. Poilievre is the 77th person designated as the Canadian Press Newsmaker of the Year. The very first one, in 1946, was also from Ottawa. Igor Gouzenko was a cypher clerk at the Soviet embassy who defected with proof of the Soviet Union’s espionage in the West. (Stephanie Taylor in the Canadian Press)

🚌 OC Transpo

  •  OC Transpo will reduce bus service during storms. Under a new plan, if 31 cm of snow is predicted – or other severe storm conditions – buses will be cut back to a reduced scheduled. O Trains and ParaTranspo will not be affected. (City of Ottawa)

🚨 Terrorism

  •  The youth charged with targeting Jews Friday has new charges of being in possession or control of explosives added. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are tight lipped over the case due to the age of the suspect. The new charges came after a search warrant found materials used in explosives in the suspect’s residence. (Andrew Foote at CBC)
