WILDLIFE UPDATE

Spring has sprung, and bears have already accessed unlocked totes in neighbourhoods due to residents leaving totes out overnight before collection day.

Squamish, we can do better! It takes a community to be Bear Smart, please do your part and help keep bears safe.

Bears are smart, resourceful, and determined when it comes to finding food, and some have learned ways to break into locked totes. There is also evidence that they can learn our tote collection schedules in Squamish meaning they know when to visit each neighbourhood.

You Can Help!

If residents notice poor attractant management practices, please talk to your neighbours or report to the Bylaw Office at 604.815.5067. An enforcement campaign will take place across Squamish to gain compliance in the management of wildlife attractants. Broken totes can be reported to GFL for replacement at 604.892.5607 or squamishtotes@gflenv.com.

Any person within Squamish who is convicted of an offence under the District of Squamish Wildlife Attractant Bylaw No. 2781, 2020, shall be liable to pay a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000.

PROVINCE ISSUES LONG-TERM LICENCE TO SQUAMISH COMMUNITY FOREST

Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) and District of Squamish are celebrating a major milestone for the Squamish Community Forest. A Community Forest Agreement (CFA) was issued by the Province of British Columbia on December 22, 2022, and is valid for a period of 25 years with a replacement option every 10 years. Squamish joins 60 Community Forest Agreements operating across the province.

“This initiative represents an amazing opportunity for the District of Squamish to work directly and collaboratively with the Squamish Nation to jointly and sustainably manage local forests in a way that reflects the goals and values identified by our community,” says District of Squamish Mayor and Squamish Community Forest Board Chair Armand Hurford. “A great deal of work has happened to get us to where we are today and we extend our appreciation to the Province of British Columbia for their support in making this possible for Squamish.

DISTRICT OF SQUAMISH RECEIVES $400K IN FUNDING FOR SUSTAINABLE STORMWATER SERVICE DELIVERY PLAN

The District of Squamish has received federal funding in the amount of $400,000 from the Strategic Priorities Fund stream of the Canada Community-Building Fund to create a Sustainable Stormwater Service Delivery Plan (SSSDP) for Brackendale and Garibaldi Estates. The SSSDP will provide a foundation for community growth, changes in regulatory standards and best practices, climate change and asset management tools.

The SSSDP will identify, assess and guide the management of all natural and built assets that provide stormwater drainage for watersheds, or catchments, north of the Mamquam River. The SSSDP will also include a 20-year capital plan, policies and regulations, and funding strategies to achieve sustainable stormwater service delivery well into the future.

NEW WATER RESERVOIRS WILL IMPROVE WATER STORAGE CAPACITY AND DELIVERY FOR SQUAMISH

The District of Squamish is installing two new water storage reservoirs at the Lower University Reservoir in order to balance and optimize the supply and delivery of water to all of Squamish. Once complete, the reservoirs will address water system shortfalls by adding storage that will enhance fire protection and reduce loading on the District’s wells at Powerhouse Springs. The reservoirs will also provide storage capacity for Valleycliffe and Hospital Hill.

“Rightsizing our reservoirs will help to build community resiliency by improving water security in the event of an emergency,” says District of Squamish Mayor Armand Hurford. “Climate change and population growth can place high demands on systems and infrastructure and so this project helps to give our system more capacity, more time to recover and a stronger foundation as we plan for the future.”

STAGE 1 WATER RESTRICTIONS IN EFFECT MAY 1

Stage One Outdoor Water Use restrictions will be in effect as of May 1. Lawn watering will be limited to two days per week between 4 and 10 a.m., and 7 and 10 p.m. on Thursday and Sunday for odd-numbered addresses, and Wednesday and Saturday for even-numbered addresses.

In Stage 1, a permit is required to water new sod/seeded lawns. Once Stage 2 is in effect permits will no longer be issued. Call Public Works at 604.815.6868 to obtain a free Outdoor Water Use permit to support additional watering to establish new lawns.

Water conservation tips:

  • Now is a great time to install new sod or put down grass seed, taking advantage of the cooler weather and spring rains.
  • Consider watering your gardens with a handheld hose equipped with an automated shut-off nozzle.

COMMUNITY NOTICES AND EVENTS

Notification of low-level flying over Squamish

The District of Squamish has received notification that Talon Helicopters will be performing low-level flying over the region for LiDAR surveys between May 1 and June 15. Work will take place during daylight hours as per special authorization issued by Transport Canada. There will be no activity on the ground related to this flight.

This work is part of FortisBC’s annual inspection of its high-pressure transmission natural gas lines and is an important part of FortisBC's integrity management program. The low-flying helicopter uses LaSen’s aerial LiDAR detection technology to inspect the pipelines. This technology is used to detect any issues to ensure FortisBC’s system continues to operate safely and reliably, and to plan maintenance activities accordingly.

For any questions in relation to this project, please contact Talon Helicopters at 604.214.3585.
