If residents notice poor attractant management practices, please talk to your neighbours or report to the Bylaw Office at 604.815.5067. An enforcement campaign will take place across Squamish to gain compliance in the management of wildlife attractants. Broken totes can be reported to GFL for replacement at 604.892.5607 or squamishtotes@gflenv.com.
Any person within Squamish who is convicted of an offence under the District of Squamish Wildlife Attractant Bylaw No. 2781, 2020, shall be liable to pay a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000.
In 2010, the District of Squamish was certified as a "Bear Smart Community" by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.
If you have not already, please IMMEDIATELY adopt the following Bear Smart best practices:
- Lock and secure your totes at all times except for ONLY on collection day;
- Only put totes out for collection on the morning of collection day and NEVER the night before;
- Freeze odorous food items and place them in the tote on the morning of collection day;
- Remove birdfeeders or ensure they are 10 feet off the ground with a seed catch tray;
- Pick fruit as it ripens and don’t let it collect on the ground;
- Keep barbecues clean and grease-free by burning an extra 5 minutes after removing food and don't forget to remove and/or clean all barbecue tools;
- Rinse all recycling; and
- Talk to your neighbours about managing their attractants.
