  •  Harvest: A Feast of Fall returns next Wednesday September 13th with an evening of food by award-winning chefs. This year's event, which supports Youturn Youth Support Services, features the Butcher’s Ball, which will team chefs with local butchers (with support from local farmers), to serve food and drink selections celebrating the bounty of the season. From 6:00 pm at allsaints Event Space / Working Title Kitchen, 330 Laurier Ave.
  •  Good news for Korean waffle fans, Sharpfle Waffle has relocated from Wellington Street West to Mechanicsville. The wafflery had shut down in April after it was kicked out of its space in a three-way argy bargy with Stella Luna and the landlord. The gelato shop said renting the shop to Sharpfle Waffle was a violation of its own lease, which promised exclusivity over some items. (Charlie Senack in the Kitchissippi Times)
  •  Not really Ottawa based but Tim Hortons now has a clothing line. If you are in the market for Always Fresh sweatpants, TimShop.ca has you covered. (The Canadian Press)
  •  Ottawa writer and entrepreneur Natalie MacLean left the tech industry for the writing-about-wine trade, a journey that she has documented in her book Wine Witch On Fire: Rising from the Ashes of Divorce, Defamation, and Drinking Too Much. (Mia Jensen in the Ottawa Business Journal)
  •  Peter Hum at the Ottawa Citizen has taken another look at Union 613, which originally opened in 2012. Hum was pleased with the drinks and the mains but thought the small plates needed bigger ideas.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🌊 River House

  •  The National Capital Commission is keeping weekend lifeguards on duty until October. The Commission’s new pool in the Ottawa River at River House has been a summer hit. Elsewhere, despite the heat, the City has ended lifeguards at all City beaches. (Ted Raymond at CTV)

🤑 Finance and Corporate Services Committee

  •  The City’s Finance and Corporate Services Committee opened the pocketbook today.

    •
The Committee recommended the purchase of a former residence of Catholic priests in Alta Vista for $18.5 million. The 100 room building sits on 8.7 acres of land, which could also be redeveloped. (Blair Crawford in the Ottawa Citizen)

    • The Committee also recommended raising the various taxes for an overall 2.5 per cent increase. City Council will take up both issues on September 13. (City of Ottawa

🏅  Order of Ottawa

  •  Nominations for the Order of Ottawa end this Friday. Nominations for anyone who has ‘made a major impact, influence, and outstanding benefit to our community and the broader community through career and community contributions’ are welcome. But no nominating yourself, your family member, any sitting politician or working official, someone who is dead, or a volunteer. Yeah, the City has a separate award for those volunteer types so don’t nominate them

Incidently, when you nominate someone, their name remains on the list for five years. (City of Ottawa)

➕ The same deadline applies for the Brian Kilrea Award for Excellence in Coaching award. Volunteers are okay for this one.
