HELLO OTTAWA

  • The only blues you’ll see during Bluesfest is if you try driving around LeBreton Flats over the next fortnight.

  • Bluesfest has taken over, and your best bet will be taking the bus or taking the O Train on line 1. Transit – including Para Transpo – is free for Bluesfest wrist band holders, who only need to show the wristband to the driver.

  • However, on O Train, you’ll need to use the video chat at the gate to get someone to let you in.

  • Starting today, the following streets will be closed throughout the festival:

  • Wellington Street between Lett Street and Vimy Place
    • Reduced by a single lane in each direction on Tuesday, July 2 at 6 am until Friday, July 19 at 6 pm.
    • Closed nightly, 5 pm to midnight
  • Kichi ZÄ«bÄ« MÄ«kan between Vimy Place and Slidell Street
  • Booth Street between Wellington Street and Albert Street
    • Nightly 5 pm to midnight
  • Kichi ZÄ«bÄ« MÄ«kan eastbound between Parkdale Avenue and Booth Street
  • Kichi ZÄ«bÄ« MÄ«kan westbound between Vimy Place and Slidell Street
    • Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5, 5 pm to midnight
    • Tuesday, July 9 to Friday, July 12, 5 pm to midnight
    • Saturday, July 6 and Sunday, July 7, 8 am to midnight

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

đŸ’„ Clarke Kelly

  • Police were called after an altercation between West Carleton - March ward councillor Clarke Kelly and the operator of a daycare. The West Carleton Kids Korner said they called Ottawa Police after Kelly ‘started yelling profanities at staff, threatening that camps has to go and using vulgar language and names towards staff and children’. The daycare had been running a summer camp in its office which is next door to Kelly’s in a City-owned complex in west Ottawa. The daycare says it is asking for a peace bond to ensure it does not happen again. Kelly says it ‘wasn't my finest moment as councillor’ but the dispute is a culmination of almost two years of messes, noise, and toys left in hallways. (William Eltherington at CTV)

🏇 Musical Ride

  •  The Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Musical Ride is suffering from a lack of recruits. A new report says the Ride, based in Rockcliffe, is lacking riders because Mountie supervisors across Canada are unwilling to sign off on transfers because they themselves are short staffed. (Catharine Tunney at CBC)

DEALS OF THE DAY

Hey, nostalgia fans. Retrokid is holding a site wide 40% off sale. Shop for tees, bags, beanies and sweats celebrating Big Comfy Couch, Fraggle Rock, Nanalan, TVO Telefrançais, Mr Dressup, and Sesame Street. No code necessary.

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

In his 613 newsletter, Neil Saravanamuttoo has reviewed the City’s auditor general report on Lansdowne 2.0 and figures that the project equals a one per cent increase in property tax. Lansdowne 2.0’s construction cost will be $493 million, which works out to around $20 million a year in debt servicing for 30 years. ‘That $20 million is equivalent to a 1% property tax increase for all residents and businesses in Ottawa’, Saravanamuttoo says.
