HELLO OTTAWA

We had great plans for our trip back from Vancouver to Ottawa yesterday. We’d write the ottawan at 41,000 ft above Saskatoon using Porter Airlines’ free wifi and be in your inboxes at a decent hour. Yada yada yada, we apologize for missing yesterday’s edition.

Congratultions are in order for the winners of the Ottawa Book Awards, doled out at a gala last night.

The winners are:

English fiction: Jean Van Loon, Nuclear Family,

English non-fiction: Tim Cook, Lifesavers and Body Snatchers: Medical Care and the Struggle for Survival in the Great War.

French fiction: Nancy Vickers, Capharnaüm.

French non-fiction: Maurice Henrie, La tête haute.

The Archibald Lampman Award for poetry went to Conyer Clayton for But the sun, and the ships, and the fish, and the waves.

The Prix littéraire Émergence AAOF 2023 went to Alexis Rodrigue-Lafleur for Rêve-Creux.

We need your nominations for the Best of Ottawa Awards 2023

The nomination round will last until next Monday, October 16 for the categories of Dining Out, Shops + Services, Culture, Media, and People + Places.

Despite the ‘Best of Ottawa’ name, nominees can also be located in Gatineau, anywhere in the Ottawa Valley, or the Pontiac region. Remember, these awards celebrate local, so if a nominee is a branch its head office must be located in the above regions.

Please help make this the best Best Of ever and make your nominations now.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚊 OC Transpo

🚑 Paramedics

  • The Ottawa Paramedic Service will trial using taxis to transport low risk patients to non-hospital destinations. Starting Nov 1, after a patient has been examined by a paramedic, low risk patients who need to go somewhere else other than a hospital may be called a taxi. The Service said they’ll follow up within 24 hours. Loading and unloading at hospitals is blamed for some of the delay in the paramedic service. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

🚨 Ottawa Police Service

  • Ottawa Police constable who stood on man’s neck for two minutes found guilty of assault. Goran Beric was one of four officers who responded to a report of a man covered in blood and screaming inside an Ottawa Community Housing building on Bronson Avenue. The judge found that Beric was an unreliable witness, with discrepencies between his notes, his testimony, and surveillance video. The sentence has not yet been pronounced. (Kristy Nease)

🚨 Residential Schools

  • A 97 year-old woman has been arrested for historic sexual assaults in the 60s and 70s. The Ontario Provincial Police has arrested the woman who was a Sisters of Charity of Ottawa nun, who worked at St. Anne’s Indian Residential School in Fort Albany between 1958 and 1968.
