• ‘Show us some loved spaces across the city and create a playful short!’ say the people who didn’t email us about it, the Ottawa Regional Society of Architects.

  For those that don’t speak corporatese, a ‘reel’ is a video on Instagram and Facebook. Calling it a video is like asking for a large instead of a venti at Starbucks.

  • 2nd place - $150 prize for ORSA members/ $100 for non Society members

•  Ottawa’s Dutch Groceries shop recently turned 70, and they’re celebrating in a big way this weekend. Reserve your spot on Friday (September 22) or Saturday (September 23) to sample the Dutch treats, check out special food deals, and enjoy the fun stuff going on in store.
•  The number 7 holds special significance at Flora Hall. Each Monday through Thursday from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm, the brewery marks Happy Hour (and a half) with $7 Flora fresh draft beers and $7 appies.
•  La Dolce Vita (180 Preston St) has been closed for dining in while Chef Nello and his family have been visiting family back in Portugal. For one more week, service is limited to take-out and delivery. Dining-in returns September 28 (next Thursday). Until then, for pickup call the resto at 613-233-6239 and for delivery, use Skip the Dishes and UberEats.
•  Peter Hum in the Ottawa Citizen went for Persian cuisine at the two month-old Café Tehran because a reader wrote in complaining that too many restaurants bury their dishes in spices. He writes that the fare was ‘mildly but distinctively spiced’ and ‘with properly grilled kebabs, ample servings and perhaps new but accessible flavours’.
•  Ameya Charnalia at Eat The Strip went to Schnitzel Works in an industrial area near Cyrville LRT station. They only make schnitzel. Chamalia's companion said the Spanish sandwich – served with sauteed onions, hot peppers, and melted cheese on a fresh kaiser bun with mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato – was ‘one of the best sandwiches she’d ever had’.
• @foodsofottawa tried the newly opened French Canadian wine bar Buvette Daphnée in the ByWard Market, and "loved every dish." They say you must not skip the exceptional desserts. 
•  Faces magazine has published a list of ‘Ottawa’s Must-Try Breakfasts’. Faces, you must try harder – this is only a list of three: Main Street Cafe, Wilf & Ada’s, and The Village Cafe.
  
  Off the top of our heads, we can think of satisfying breakfasts at Reynold’s, The King Eddy, Eddy's Diner, Father and Sons, Oat Couture, and Resto Chez Mo-Nik.

🚮 Garbage News

•  The City’s Environment and Climate Change has approved banning yard waste from the green bin. Also approved was stopping Friday pick-ups – refuse workers would work slightly longer hours the rest of the week – and spending $8 million per year to send garbage to private landfills. If approved by Council, the new rules begin March 2026. (Ted Raymond at CTV)

💉 Drugs

•  Ottawa Public Health will report the results online of new drug purity testing machines at four supervised injection sites. Many overdoses of opioids are caused by not understanding the strength of what the user has bought, or by unknown additions. (Arthur White-Crummey at CBC)

🚍 OC Transpo

•  Councillors Glen Gower, Cathy Curry and Wilson Lo want buses to replace the O Train Stage 3. Stage 3 would bring O Train to Kanata, Stittsville, and Barrhaven. The three councillors, from Stittsville, Kanata, and Barrhaven, respectively, say putting buses on the road now would save time and money. (Ken Warren in the Ottawa Citizen)

🛻 Convoy on Trial

Convoy co-organizers Chris Barber and Tamara Lich are currently on trial for their parts in the Convoy siege. We’ll mention when something interesting happens.

•  Kim Ayotte, Ottawa's manager of emergency and protective services, testified that the City was expecting a ‘worst case scenario’ from the Convoy as they were not getting intelligence from the Ottawa Police Service. Proceedings were stopped during cross-examination when Ayotte said that he did not bring his notes, stating that he didn’t think that he would need them. (David Fraser at CBC)
•  At day ten of a 16 day trial, court staff are trying to find more free court dates in in October and November.
•  The Ottawa Citizen is live blogging the trial.
  
  ➕Related Former Ontario Member of Provincial Parliament Randy Hillier has gone to court for a second time to have his Convoy-related jury trial moved from Ottawa. Hillier lost his bid to move the trial previously but the judge later overruled himself when an unrelated Supreme Court decision said judges should be more cautious in dismissing applications.Hillier believes the jury pool would be tainted against him in Ottawa.

Here’s a question: is 24 Sussex Drive subject to the new Revenue Canada underused housing tax? Canadians who own a residence directly don’t need to file a form, but those who own a residence through a private corporation or trust must do so and pay the annual 1% tax. Anyway, the answer is no. Crown corporations are excluded.

the ottawan sent an email to City Hall last week asking if 24 Sussex was subject to the City’s Vacant Unit Tax. The good news, we received a response, sent on a Saturday even. The bad news, the responder seemed to assume that we owned 24 Sussex Drive and suggested we look at our property tax bill.
