HELLO OTTAWA

Did you know that your transit fare is included in your Bluesfest ticket? We didn’t. It’s good three hours before the show and two hours after.

We do know that car drivers are going to see a snarl around LeBreton Flats this weekend and next, while the festival is on.

Several streets will be closed nightly throughout the festival, between 5 p.m. and midnight:

  • Booth Street between Wellington Street/Kichi Zībī Mīkan and Albert Street.
  • Kichi Zībī Mīkan eastbound between Parkdale Avenue and Booth Street.
  • Kichi Zībī Mīkan westbound between Portage Bridge and Slidell Street.

We’ll keep repeating this while it is too hot: Ottawa Public Health has a list of places to cool off, including pools, parks, recreation centres, and splash pads.

The City also has a list of outdoor water fountains to fill your bottle for free.

🏗️ Housing

  • The finance and corporate services and housing and planning committees have approved a plan to accelerate new housing. The committees want to get funding from the federal Housing Accelerator Fund, which would add an additional 7,000 homes to the 19,500 new housing units expected to be built in the next three years. The plan – which needs changes to several bylaws to enact – is:

    • Build close to transit

    • Add duplexes and triplexes to existing single family lots

    • Pay developers to develop affordable housing

    • Convert office space to residential

    • Sell surplus City land at a discount to developers

    • Approve the backlog of existing housing plans

    (Elyse Skura at CBC)

🌬️ Renewable Energy

  • The Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee wants add a step to  building wind turbines and solar fields. As it stands, large scale wind, solar power fields, and battery-storage facilities are permitted anywhere in the City. The new rules would say they are not permitted unless a rezoning process is completed. The underlying issue of this is coming from people who think that wind turbines cause health problems. (City of Ottawa) (The Report)
