HELLO OTTAWA

Hydro Ottawa has good news and bad news.

Good news is that power outages can now be reported online at this link. The bad news is that some bright spark at Hydro Ottawa figured that what we want to do when we report a power outage is sign up for a MyAccount to do it.

You don't need to be a Hydro Ottawa Customer, sure, but you’ll get a Hydro Ottawa account whether you want one or not.

For those of you who still have landlines – the only kind that work during a power outage – you can still call 613 738 0188.

Hydro Ottawa also has Apple and Android apps. Besides reporting outages, you can also view your electricity usage every day.

OTTAWA STATS

Number

  • 21,000
  • – The net loss of workers in downtown Gatineau. In 2016, there were 36,070 people working downtown, in 2021, it had fallen to 14,460. A City-requested report from Observatoire du développement de l'Outaouais recommends supporting small business to stanch the wound. (CBC) (The Report [French only])

Ottawan of the Day

  • Bonnie Rankin
  • –  As a certified Canadian Quilters Association judge, the Stittsville resident has judged quilts and quilting challenges in Ontario, Québec, British Columbia and the US. She looks for ‘good balance, depth, movement, appropriate colours as well as ensuring that the techniques used are well done, appropriate and that the overall piece hangs well’. Rankin has been selected by the US-based North Country Quilting Guild to judge the 2024 biennial quilt show May 31–June 2 in Clayton, New York. (Lillian Knoops in Stittsville Central)

Quote

  • Public servants deserve to be paid accurately and on time for their work

  • – In most situations, this would be an obvious and not-worth-mentioning statement but coming from Jean-Yves Duclos, minister of public services and procurement, it's good to hear it out loud. Duclos was discussing the possible replacement of the Federal government’s Phoenix pay system with another system, Dayforce. Dayforce is a Minnesota-based company formerly known as Ceridian. (Jim Wilson in Human Resources Director magazine)

📋 Agenda

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🐀 24 Sussex Drive

  •  The tests are in: 24 Sussex Drive is rat and asbestos free. Regardless, the official residence of the Prime Minister requires $37 million to become habitable once again. Former director of communications to Stephen Harper, Andrew MacDougall, says that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau missed his chance to renovate after the high of his first election. Trudeau and family currently live in Rideau Cottage on the grounds of Rideau Hall. (Jennifer Chevalier at CBC)

🚌 Park-and-Ride Lots

  •  Riverside South-Findlay Creek ward councillor Steve Desroches wants more activity on underused park-and-ride lots. Desroches suggests using the lots for airport parking with shuttle buses, but a City bylaw prevents overnight parking. He also suggested using them as pickleball courts during the summer. Stittsville ward councillor Glen Gower has suggested using them for housing. An unnamed person from the City said that as transit use grows, the lots will be used more. (Guy Quenneville at CBC)

💽 Technically Beautiful

  •  Ottawa tech company Leonovus has sold all its assets to a US company for $2.5 million. That leaves the company with ‘significant amount of cash’ and a listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange. However, unless the company buys or creates a new business, it will be relegated to the stock exchange’s minor leagues, the NEX Board. In 2022, Leonovus sold only $5,000 worth of its data-encryption-across-multiple-cloud-servers business. (David Sali in the Ottawa Business Journal)
