- – The new deposit for cans and bottles in Gatineau, as well as all of Québec. New rules starting today put a deposit on small cans of 100 millilitres, cans of juice or carbonated water, and wine bottles. The deposit itself was raised from 5¢. (Matthew Lapierre at CBC)
Some people may think that this is the perfect opportunity to recreate a classic Kramer/Newman scheme from Seinfeld over deposit arbitrage. Ontario has no deposits on soft drinks, and a quick trip across the bridge with a bag of cans could create a big score. - Unfortunately, accepting a return of a deposit when you never paid it in the first place is completely illegal. Even over nickles and dimes.
Ottawans of the Day - Jane Gurr, Sarah Marks and Mikey Tachuk, Stephanie Lalonde, Maissa Houri, and Karolyne Natasha
- – These Ottawa-based filmakers will be presenting their works – Lunch at the Rideau, Impulse Control, Life After…, A Simple Mixup, and Broken Waters / Brise glace this Saturday at the ByTown as part of the Ottawa Canadian Film Festival.

- The British Hotel in Aylmer announced last Monday that the British Public House and Restaurant would be closing permanently, effective immediately. The business explained that inflation, rising interest rates, and increasing costs of goods and general expenses were all to blame. The rooms will now transform into an event space for private hire and performance programming. The British Café and British Hotel rooms will continue to function as normal.
- Boulangerie Lusa has permanently closed its Hintonburg location. Don’t despair, you can still get their fresh Portuguese pastries, sandwiches, and snacks in Gatineau at 67 rue Wellington St. The owners are also hinting that a new location will be opening soon.
- Ottawa chocolatier Alija Confections has released a new Maple Bar, and you can save 20% on it this week only.
- Vodkow is turning five, and celebrating with a new release. Just in time for slow sipping over the holidays, the Chocolate Orange Cream Liquor combines orange and chocolate with Canadian cream. And of course, Vodkow vodka.
- Peter Hum in the Ottawa Citizen has dropped a digest of differing Ottawa dosas. Of Dosa King, Mahal Tanjore, Royal Paan, and Sundari’s Kitchen, Hum rates Mahal Tanjore and Sundari’s Kitchen at the top but somehow, Jacquelin Holzman, Ottawa’s mayor in the 1990s, weighs in and she prefers Royal Paan.
- At Eat the Strip, Ameya Charnalia has found a home-style Japanese joint on the ground floor of a medicial office building. Charnalia has been dreaming of the takoyaki (battered balls of octopus) at Takedon Ottawa ever since he had an ‘aha’ moment: ‘The interior was like nothing we’ve had before; it was popping with flavour. It was doughy, creamy and tangy’.

📋 Agenda | WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT | ⛲ Afghan War Memorial - The design of the planned Afghan War Memorial is in dispute. A panel of experts had chosen a minimalist design by Team Daoust, however, the Federal government subsequently ran an online survey and declared Team Stimson the winner. Team Daoust lated filed a formal complaint with the Canadian International Trade Tribunal. (Murray Brewster at CBC) (Team Daost design) (Team Stimson design)
✡️ Ottawa Jewish Community School - The Ottawa Jewish Community School received a bomb threat yesterday afternoon. Ottawa Police Services investigated and found no threat to the school or to the Jewish community centre next door. (William Etherington at CTV)
🏒 The Sens - The general manager of the Ottawa Senators has been fired. Pierre Dorion has held the position since 2016. The dismissal came a few hours after the National Hockey league penalized the team by taking away a first round draft pick because ... this all seems very small in the scheme of things.
The Sens traded forward Evgenii Dadonov to Las Vegas in 2021 but did not give Vegas the list of teams to which Dadonov could not be further traded. Vegas then traded Dadonov to the Anaheim Ducks, which was on that list. The League had to get involved and roll back the trade, punishing the Sens for its role in the affair. (Associated Press) ⛺ Heron Road Community Centre - The City will be using Heron Road Community Centre as a makeshift emergency shelter this winter. City staff find that all other shelter options will be full and there is a need for the 200 beds that will be made available. Recreational services at the centre will cease at the end of this month until further notice. (Arthur White-Crummey at CBC)
📱 Federal Public Employees - Federal public employees were changed to the problematic new health care plan because Canada Life is the only company that bid for the contract. Over 1.7 million federal workers, retirees, and their dependents switched from Sun Life as their health care plan in June, which has resulted in numerous complaints of poor service and claim denials. Treasury Board President Anita Anand said that even though Canada Life was the only bidder for the contract, it did meet the standard asked for. (CBC)
🚗 Genesis - If you are interested in buying a new Genesis – that’s the luxury class brand of Hyundai – Dilawri Automotive Group has opened a new dealership at 1 Laster Street. It’s the only Genesis dealer in Ottawa. (Canadian Auto Dealer)
🛻 Convoy Trial Tamara Lich and Chris Barber are on trial for their actions in the Convoy siege. - The defence says that it cannot cross examine the police officers provided as witnesses for the Crown unless it can see unredacted documents from Ottawa police. The police officer witnesses have messages missing from their phones, which they testified happened when they did a police mandated software upgrade.
The judge has ordered the documents be turned over to her, and said ‘it “is very unusual” for two police officers who were expected to be trial witnesses to have lost potential evidence because of a phone upgrade’.
