HELLO OTTAWA

It’s official: residents will have a fixed maximum of three bins of rubbish but no stickers.

City staff had recommended that all households receive 55 stickers per year to place on their garbage bins, with extra stickers available for $3 each. City Council this morning threw out that plan and replaced it with three bins in total, and no way to buy extras.

The original point of the sticker plan was to reduce amount that goes to the landfill, as the City says the average home uses three bins. As the status quo is preserved, there is no reduction in rubbish and the problem of an about-to-be-full Trail Road landfill remains.

🚨 Gatineau Police Service

  •  A Gatineau Police Service constable was arrested for uttering threats and obstruction of justice. Initially, Gatineau police intervened with the off duty officer and decided there was no crime, instead driving him home. The arrest was made by police in MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais. (Ottawa Citizen)

🚨 Ottawa Carleton District School Board

  •  The Ottawa Carleton District School Board declined to discuss allowing police into its school once again at last night's meeting. The board ended the practice of having Ottawa Police Service officers in its schools in June 2021 over the Service‘s poor relationship with minority groups. Trustee Donna Blackburn brought up the idea once again but was ruled out of order as she had already brought it up in May 2022.   •  Listen to jazz, classical, popular tunes, and world music at OrKidstra’s final concert of the season, as 150 young musicians play their hearts out. It’s free to attend but donations are welcome. 6:30pm at Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre, 355 Cooper St. The concert will also be live streamed on the OrKidstra’s YouTube channel.
  •  Clear your head with a country drive and head to Metcalfe Farmers Market’s Night Market. Tonight’s the first edition of 2023, and there will be live music, plenty of free parking, and 45 vendors. 5:00pm to 8:00pm at the Metcalfe Fairgrounds, 2821 8th Line Road, Metcalfe ON.

  •  Ottawa Music Industry Coalition presents Songs from the Shed on Sparks St., every Tuesday and Thursday evenings until October 12. Located between O’Connor and Bank St., you’ll always find free music to accompany your lunch. 11:30am to 1:00pm.
  •  There are still a few tickets for the Wines of Piedmont Masterclass, which is part of Italian Week Ottawa.
  •  Overflow Brewing welcomes Nate Silva to the stage for “post-grunge and dance rock vibes.”

Friday

  •  MPP for Ottawa Centre Joel Harden chairs the Forum on Youth Mental Health, a public forum to discuss the rise in mental health challenges including isolation and lack of community for young people. The forum will hear from concerned parents and experts, and will also look at the programs available to youth. If you can't RSVP to attend in person, the event will also be streamed. 4:00pm in the groundfloor board room at 464 Metcalfe Street (Centretown Citizens Ottawa Corporation).
  •  Italian Week Ottawa's Lunchtime Series wraps up with Italian Chamber Music, performed by a quartet led by NAC Orchestra's Associate Concertmaster Jessica Linnebach. Ottawa Public Library Main Branch, 120 Metcalfe St at 12:00pm. 
  •  Festival Franco-Ontarien returns to Majors Hill Park today through Sunday. Kids 10 and under go free, everyone else can buy a day pass or VIP pass to enjoy the live music, interactive games, beer from Microbrasserie Cassel Brewery and Brasserie Tuque from Broue Brewery Inc.
