- – The two year-old had been waiting nearly 19 months after his adoption from a Bulgarian orphanage to get his Canadian citizenship. The day after the National Post ran a story about the the issue, however, Aleksander joined the club. 📋 Agenda | WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT | 🏙️ City Council - Yesterday’s City Council meeting rubber stamped several decisions already approved by its subcommittees:
- The two towers that may cast shadows on the Experimental Farm have been approved. Taggart Realty Management now has the okay to build its 16 and 27 story towers. (Josh Pringle at CTV)
- Garbage new rules – strike that, reverse it – new garbage rules have been approved. Starting 2026, yard waste may no longer go into the green bin, garbage pick up will be Monday to Thursday, and the City will spend $8 million per year for private landfills.
Also, non-profits have new fees for their donation boxes. The new permit is $500 plus $150 per box per year. (Stittsville Central) - Additionally, the City has officially requested Ontario’s new housing minister, Paul Calandra to review the the Province’s decision to add 650 hectares of Ottawa greenspace to development. Kitchissippi resident Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, who previously was not interested in having the greenspace looked at, was supportive this time, saying that it goes against the Official Plan and will be costly to service with infrastructure. 🏘️ Museums - The Canada Aviation and Space Museum is giving away its 1920 flying boat. The mahogony Curtiss Model 18 Seagull flying boat was given to the museum in 1968 and restored to pristine condition. However, although it looks cool, it has no connection to Canada so the museum is giving it to the private Montréal Aviation Museum. (Blair Crawford in the Ottawa Citizen)
📽️ Cine Starz - The Cine Starz in Orléans has closed with immediate effect. A notice on the door from the landlord shows that the cinema owed $82,000 in back rent. Ciné Starz is still showing films at its St. Laurent Centre location. (Josh Pringle at CTV)
🐴 Horse, flies - Two more nearby horses have tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis virus. The two horses in Lanark County cannot spread the disease to humans but the mosquitos who gave it to them can spread it. Symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and drowsiness. (Ted Raymond at CTV)

- Today is Test Your Smoke Alarm Day. The City of Ottawa recommends that we all check our smoke alarms once per month, and replace the batteries each year. You should replace your alarm every 10 years.
- Did you know that the Metcalfe Fair, which opens today, moved to its current home in 1861? Now you do. The 167th edition of the Fair begins the day with judging of categories like Grains, 4-H Field Crops, Homecrafts, and Eggs. At 4:00 pm the gates and midway open, and the Demolition Derby gets underway at 7:00 pm. Day tickets and weekend passes are available.

Saturday National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - The programme on Parliament Hill begins with a 90-minute gathering Remembering the Children. Produced by the Aboriginal People’s Television Networth (APTN) and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, the multi-lingual broadcast will honour residential school survivors, their families and communities, and the children who did not return home. The event begins at 1:00 pm on Parliament Hill, or watch the broadcast on APTN.
- Buildings across Canada, including the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill, will be lit in orange from tonight at 7:00 pm to sunrise tomorrow. The OTTAWA sign in ByWard Market will also be illuminated in orange.
- Beechwood Cemetery will be partnering with the Assembly of Seven Generations and the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society for a day of education, action, and activities including a screening of The Spirit Bear: Honouring Memories, Planting Dreams! Following the screening there will be a 45 minute Reconciliation Tour. At 2:00 pm the Children’s Sacred Forest will be unveiled at the Cemetery.
- The Canadian Museum of History will be screening the film Picking up the Pieces: the Making of the Witness Blanket throughout the day. Admission to the Canadian Museum of History is free all Saturday (September 30) from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and you can reserve your timed ticket here.
- Seven Ottawa Public Library branches will be open and offering activities in support of reflection and learning. Paint remembrance rocks, take part in the building of a heart garden, watch NFB films about the residential school system, and check out the truth and reconciliation reading list.
