OTTAWA STATS

Number

  • $2,400
  • – The amount of a gift card given to a retiring staff member of the Manotick Business Improvement Area, $100 for each year of service. The City’s auditor general criticized the gift as an inappropriate expense, as were flowers and spa accessories given to the family members of directors on compassionate grounds. Business Improvement Areas are funded by a levy added to local business property taxes. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

Ottawan of the Day

  • Aleksandar Hanniman
  • – The two year-old had been waiting nearly 19 months after his adoption from a Bulgarian orphanage to get his Canadian citizenship. The day after the National Post ran a story about the the issue, however, Aleksander joined the club. Because he was not a citizen, Ontario would not issue him a medical card – and are now still making him wait the standard three months. (Bryan Passifiume in the National Post)

Quote

  • Compensating parents for lost wages and costs incurred by having to transport their children to school should be offered but I have seen no mention of this
  • – West Carleton - March ward councillor Clarke Kelly on the Ottawa School Transport Authority’s lack of service to Ottawa schoolkids.  (Clarke Kelly)

📋 Agenda

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🏙️ City Council

  •  Yesterday’s City Council meeting rubber stamped several decisions already approved by its subcommittees:
  •  The two towers that may cast shadows on the Experimental Farm have been approved. Taggart Realty Management now has the okay to build its 16 and 27 story towers. (Josh Pringle at CTV)
  •  Garbage new rules – strike that, reverse it – new garbage rules have been approved. Starting 2026, yard waste may no longer go into the green bin, garbage pick up will be Monday to Thursday, and the City will spend $8 million per year for private landfills.

Also, non-profits have new fees for their donation boxes. The new permit is $500 plus $150 per box per year. (Stittsville Central)
  •  Additionally, the City has officially requested Ontario’s new housing minister, Paul Calandra to review the the Province’s decision to add 650 hectares of Ottawa greenspace to development. Kitchissippi resident Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, who previously was not interested in having the greenspace looked at, was supportive this time, saying that it goes against the Official Plan and will be costly to service with infrastructure. (Blair Crawford in the Ottawa Citizen)

🏘️ Museums

  •  The Canada Aviation and Space Museum is giving away its 1920 flying boat. The mahogony Curtiss Model 18 Seagull flying boat was given to the museum in 1968 and restored to pristine condition. However, although it looks cool, it has no connection to Canada so the museum is giving it to the private Montréal Aviation Museum. (Blair Crawford in the Ottawa Citizen)

📽️ Cine Starz

  •  The Cine Starz in Orléans has closed with immediate effect. A notice on the door from the landlord shows that the cinema owed $82,000 in back rent. Ciné Starz is still showing films at its St. Laurent Centre location. (Josh Pringle at CTV)

🐴 Horse, flies

  •  Two more nearby horses have tested positive for eastern equine encephalitis virus. The two horses in Lanark County cannot spread the disease to humans but the mosquitos who gave it to them can spread it. Symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and drowsiness. (Ted Raymond at CTV)

Indigenous artist Mike Ivall has redesigned logos for some Canadian Football League teams but only the Ottawa RedBlacks have adopted one. The RedBlacks Indigenized logo includes the big ‘R’ with a medicine wheel, representing ‘direction, unity, elements of the culture, and all of the races” and a squiggly line symbolizing everything that is, was, or ever will be.

An example of the logo can be seen on this hat. (Unrelated, but the RedBlacks are also selling this Ottawa RoughRiders toque)
