HELLO OTTAWA

The Transportation Safety Board has written an update to the City. It says that the causes of the O Train derailment in 2021 and the wheel failure last year are design flaws in the trains made at the City’s request.

Worse, the Board says the problems will ‘continue to pose a risk to safety until the issues are resolved’.

As pointed out by Ottawa Bulldog, in the 2021 derailment, the O Train travelled the length of four and a half football fields before it stopped.

RenĂŠe Amilcar, the city’s transit general manager, says that she can ‘can confirm that all enhanced system safety measures in place align with TSB suggestions’ and that the O Train is safe to ride. (Memo from RenĂŠe Amilcar)

Ottawa Bulldog, again, points out that is not what the Board said. Rather, the report reads: ‘To date, other than ongoing cartridge assembly free play monitoring, no concrete steps have been taken to resolve the safety deficiency identified in the (Rail Safety Advisory)’  and ‘no concrete steps have been taken to resolve the safety deficiency’.

🪅 Heritage Buildings

  • We mentioned yesterday that changes in Ontario’s heritage laws encourged the City’s Built Heritage Committee to protect the 1906 former École St-Pierre, 353 Friel Street in Sandy Hill (PDF).

The rule change is part of the Province’s ideas of building new homes. Municipalities must make their lists of heritage properties by 2024 or wait until their next chance in 2029.

Ottawa has 4,600 building on its wish list which must be vetted before being put on the heritage list.
