🤖 Worldwide Computer Blackout

•  Millions of Windows-running computers worldwide have been knocked offline due to an upgrade error. Only companies using CrowdStrike, software that is used to prevent cyber attacks, are affected – but those companies are major banks, airlines, municipalities and hospitals.
  
  In Ottawa, organizations impacted in the outage include:
  
  • Ottawa International Airport and Porter Airlines. (Air Canada and WestJet are not affected)
  
  • Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario
  
  • Queensway Carleton Hospital
  
  • The National Arts Centre says some of its third party ticket suppliers are affected.
  
  Organizations not affected include the City of Ottawa, Ottawa Police Service, Ottawa Fire Service, and Ottawa Paramedics.

🍾 Liquor Control Board of Ontario

•  The Liquor Control Board of Ontario and its striking employees have come to a tentative agreement. If striking employees ratify it over the weekend, LCBO Retail Stores will reopen for business Tuesday morning. Details of the agreement are not yet available. (Chris Fox at CTV)

🚲 Rue Wellington in Montréal

•  Economist Neil Saravanamuttoo suggests that Ottawa councillors, business improvement area mandarins, and the National Capital Commission should take a field trip to Montréal's rue Wellington. The street, which is not particularly central, has been  pedestrianized so successfully that London’s Time Out magazine called it ‘The coolest street in the world’. (Neil Saravanamuttoo in The 613)

🌊 Best Beaches for Families

•  Parenting website SavvyMom has put together a list of what it believes are the best beaches to take the rugrats. We’ve had a few nice days, so the water quality has probably improved, but you should always check Ottawa Public Health’s water quality index first.

  ➕ Related Major’s Hill Park now has free sunscreen dispensers thanks to a partnership between the Save Your Skin Foundation and the National Capital Commission.

💰 Renfrew Victoria Hospital

•  Renfrew Victoria Hospital transferred $9.6 million to a non-profit set up by former and current hospital officials. A few weeks ago, we mentioned that the Province had installed a supervisor to take financial control of the Hospital and a non-profit called Renfrew Health. Criminal activity is not alleged; it's now turning out to be a financial sleight-of-hand to keep more Provincial money. Health authorities are not allowed to keep large surpluses of money received from the Province; it must be returned. The Hospital was transferring surpluses to Renfrew Health in order to declare that it wasn’t over the limit. Renfrew Health would then use the money for offbook health related activities. Despite the Hospital being audited yearly, the Province only took action after an anonymous group complained about the financial arrangement. (Elizabeth Payne in the Ottawa Citizen)

• 🚗 If you need another reason to visit the gorgeous town of Perth this weekend, take note of Stewart Park Festival. Not only is there a full lineup of music on the main stage, but after hours you’ll find a whole new roster of performers at the town’s Crystal Palace and Perth Brewery Patio.
  
  This is the 33rd year for the festival, which is bringing artists like Kathleen Edwards, Ian Tamblyn, Skydiggers, Allysan Mei, and the Commuters to perform in the park.
