HELLO OTTAWA

• The City has finally dreamt up some rules for Little Libraries and gardens on the City’s right of way. The City had been opposed to allowing this for a long time but pesky residents, eh? They just keep trying to improving streets on their own.
• 1. Provincial law says you must contact Ontario One Call before digging.
• 2. You need to send a letter telling the City of your Little Library. You don’t need to send a letter for a garden.
• 3. A library box storage area must be between 0.9 metres and 1.10 metres in height. A garden has a maximum growing height of 1 metre for non-corner lots, and 0.75 metres for corner lots.
• 4. No gardening in ditches.

• As part of their 9th anniversary celebrations, Dominion City Brewery has released a collaboration with Toronto’s Blood Brothers Brewing and Milton’s Third Moon Brewing, the Black Widow IPA.

• Calabogie and Whitewater breweries have created a joint company called Canada Beverage Marketplace to tap into new markets. The two breweries will remain separate entities under the Canada Beverage Marketplace umbrella. 

• Peter Hum in the Ottawa Citizen talked to Sowon Kim, the owner of Social Thai on Bank Street. Social Thai is essentially three restaurants under one roof: Social Thai, Hugo Café, and the Hugo Taco truck around the corner.

• Ameya Charnalia at Eat The Strip tried out the four month-old Takumi BBQ on Merivale Road. He says that if you like Korean BBQ, then you should try these authentic dishes from Dongbei, in northern China, which share a culinary heritage with neighbouring Mongolia, Russia, and the Korean peninsula.

• Get your hands dirty on October 7 with Ottawa Farm Fresh’s 4th annual Carrot Fest. Join other volunteers to help harvest the carrot crop and enjoy live and DJ music, and something to fill your belly from a local food truck. Later in the day, you can even pick a pumpkin from the patch.

• Shellfish are the stars of Pelican Seafood’s Shell Fest, running today through October 14. Get deals on dine-in and take-out during the entire month.

🚨 Dr. Ernest Couture Child Care Centre

•  The Children’s Aid Society has been called in over allegations of sexual abuse at the Dr. Ernest Couture Child Care Centre. The daycare is operated by the City. The employee concerned has been suspended and a serious occurrence report filed with the ministry of education. (Ted Raymond at CTV)

💸 Lansdowne 2.0

•  We wrote previously of prominent people who wrote a letter to City Council asking for transparency over Lansdowne 2.0. They have written a second letter. The letter notes that the City will consider the proposal on October 18, with supporting information given by Oct 8. The group says that is not nearly enough time to go through the finances and brings up the spectre of how the O Train was railroaded – eh? eh? – through. (Glebe Community Association)

🥫 Architecture

•  The Ferndale Flightdeck. This is a little unclassifiable for us. Some bird watchers hired some architects to build a house that looks unusual and has spectacular views. That’s it. Pictures! (E-Architect)

🌳 Food Prices

•  CTV has gone out and taken pictures of grocery prices at Ottawa Loblaws and the same item at an Ottawa Dollarama. On the surface, it seems like a bit of a silly idea. Dollarama is cheaper than Loblaws? Stop the presses! But when the same Kraft Dinner for $1.50 at Dollarama is $3.50 at Lobbies, Italpasta spaghetti is $4.49 at Loblaws but only $1 at Dollarama, and Life cereal is $5.49 at Loblaws and $3.50 at Dollarama, questions start forming. 🛻 Convoy on Trial

Convoy co-organizers Chris Barber and Tamara Lich are currently on trial for their parts in the Convoy siege. We’ll mention when something interesting happens.

•  The Court heard that Lich said ‘No matter what you do, we will hold the line’ after news emerged that the Emergencies Act would be invoked by the Federal government. (Laura Osman in the Canadian Press)
