The City is asking, and we quote, ‘Do you have ideas on how the City of Ottawa can improve our services and save money to reinvest into other priorities? If so, we want to hear from you!’. We’re sure many residents have an idea where the City could save hundreds of millions of dollars, and which services have been woefully underfunded. However, every three months, the review will focus on one of these four priorities: - Has affordable housing and is more liveable for all (autumn 2023)
- Is more connected with reliable, safe and accessible mobility options (winter 2024)
- Is green and resilient (spring 2024)
- Has a diversified and prosperous economy (summer 2024)
The survey is open now for priority number one: affordable housing. Christmas Gift Guide As we do every year, we're putting together a guide to locally-made gift items for everyone on your list. We're busily putting it together again but we would love your suggestions to ensure we don't miss something great. Food items are always popular; services which offer gift certificates are good, too. Physical items are the platonic ideal, and thus the hardest to find. Send your nominations for a locally made item to 'giftguide@theottawan.com'. – Martha and Darren | - Ottawa Stats

Ottawan of the Day - Emmanuelle Zeesman
- – The actress – and 2010 Capital Critics Circle winner – performs in the current touring company of Hairspray, channelling Edith Prickley in the roles of jail matron, gym teacher, and Penny’s mother. We enjoyed her performance when we saw it on Tuesday night but didn’t catch her Ottawa bonafides until we read Lynn Saxberg’s review in the Ottawa Citizen.

📋 Nope. Not for public eyes. Very mysterious. | WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT | 🔥 The Ottawa Hospital's General campus - A woman has been arrested over gasoline poured inside the Ottawa Hospital. Spilled gasoline and messages regarding the Israel – Hamas conflict were found in a clinical area last Thursday. The woman has been charged with attempting to commit arson to endanger human life, attempting to commit arson to damage property, possessing incendiary material for arson, and two counts of mischief. She was also charged with disobeying a court order and breaching her probation for an unknown conviction. (CBC)
🎲 Ottawa Carleton District School Board - The new chair of the Ottawa Carleton District School board was elected in an unusual tie-breaking fashion: she drew the high card. Lynn Scott and previous chair Lyra Evans were tied in the vote by school trustees for chair for the next year.
School board rules state – really! – that if a vote for chair is tied in two ballots, ‘the members involved shall draw cards to determine the results, using Bridge Convention to determine ranking of cards’. The Board did not report which card each trustee pulled. While trustees are elected every four years, the board selects its own chair annually. (Joanne Laucius in the Ottawa Citizen) 🚨 Ottawa Police Service - The Ottawa Police Service have created an interactive map to view crime reports across the city. Its developers have grouped reports to the nearest corners to preserve privacy – your neighbour on the corner is not actually Al Capone. We haven’t had much time to play with it but if it is accurate, it’s quite interesting: you can select by ward, by day of week, by type of crime, and more. (Marlo Glass in the Ottawa Citizen) (Ottawa Crime Map)
🚌 Ottawa School Transport Authority - The operators of the region’s school buses say it is down to only 118 bus run cancellations. Ottawa School Transport Authority has 30 vacancies for bus drivers and currently has 38 drivers in training. When last updated, Oct 24, there were 50 vacancies and 216 bus runs cancelled. In October, the Authority agreed to inform the public every two weeks on the status of drivers. (William Eltherington at CTV)
