HELLO OTTAWA

Lies, Damn Lies, and Always Read the Tabs

Yesterday, we linked to the Carleton journalism student-run publication Capital Current’s report on a new Angus Reid Institute poll about Public Employees supporting the Federal three days in the office mandate.

Ten minutes later, the emails came in with one clear opinion – this poll stinks. Several readers went quite indepth and at length as to the flaws but we’ll let reader Keith explain because he was brief.

‘First, the 47% was not Federal Public Servants as suggested in the newsletter, it was actually 47% of self identified public sector employees. I also see no indication in the report that any verification was done on anyone union statue, so this percentage seems unverifiable.

Second, the survey was not conducted on a random sampling of Canadians as you'd expect from a legitimate and impartial source (90% members of their own forum. Note the link to their own forum is broken in their own report.), with only 10% of those sampled being from the general population.

Third, the numbers are so off from other the numbers reported by those affected as to seem suspect.’

So yes, we agree. That poll was pretty meaningless and, should we go back in time and run the item again, we would point out the flaws. Thank you to everyone who took the time to do the work.

– Martha and Darren

📋 Agenda

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

🚑 Ottawa Paramedic Service

  •  The Province has quashed the Ottawa Paramedic Service’s plan to transfer non-emergency patients by taxi. Because of funding issues, the plan was to have paramedics assess patients and decide if they needed to go to hospital by ambulance, or if they were stable enough to go by taxi. The Niagara region has a system that allows 911 callers to request an ambulance or taxi to the hospital but Ottawa did not have the proper phone system to handle that, although it is currently being upgraded. (Elyse Skura at CBC)

♿ Para Transpo

  •  Three more City councillors have taken part in the annual Para Transpo challenge by Ottawa Transit Riders. City Councillors Ariel Troster, Catherine Kitts, and Steve Desroches were the latest to be paired with a regular user ‘ambassador’ and experience the Para Transpo version of attempting normal things like booking a ride and going somewhere. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe has not yet taken part. (Ottawa Transit Riders)

BUT, ONE MORE THING ...

Last week, Bruce Deachman in the Ottawa Citizen asked for new motto for Ottawa suggestions (remember – our current motto is ‘Advance – Ottawa – En Avant’).

He attracted some live ones: ‘Ottawa: The Saskatoon of the East, Ottawa: Closed for Maintenance, Ottawa: Three Weeks of Summer — We Just Don’t Know When, and Ottawa: Isn’t It Ironic?’.

Deachman’s columnist colleague Brigitte Pellerin had this to offer: ‘How about 'meh'?

Deachman’s favourite though was from Ottawa expat Tom Curran with ‘The Heart of the Nation’ referencing the kinda heart shape of the city’s outline.

You can read all the suggestions here.
