HELLO OTTAWA - We had some good suggestions for a new location of the Prime Minister’s official residence.
- Many people suggested LeBreton Flats. Great location and the Federal government already owns it.
- George says anwhere, but 30 per cent of the new building should include social housing.
- We spotted a suggestion on Twitter that we liked: ‘Eliminate the housing allowance given to MPs. Sell off Pierre's mansion. Bulldoze Sussex, build a condo tower for MPs to stay in while working in Ottawa with a penthouse for the Prime Minister.’
Darren – not our Darren – suggested ‘A wooden shack in the middle of the Mer Bleue Bog’. Good for security, but the commute would probably be terrible. If you have a better location, email it to us at hello@theottawan.com – Martha & Darren | - Until Saturday, the Black Walnut Bakery in Cumberland is selling Dill Pickle Turnovers. These are housemade puff pastry bundles of pickles, dill, cream cheese and cheddar. Remember, we said until Saturday only.
- Gooney’s celebrates its 12th anniversary September 1 - 9 with the return of Asado Negro (caramelised roast beef). It’s available in an arepa, a Latin bowl, or a sandwich. More news from Gooney's: On September 23 the Latin American foodies will be moving to their new location at 294 Albert St.
- Whitewater O'Brien Winery is the first winery to open in Renfrew County. Opening day is Saturday at noon. The main varieties will be Marquette, Petite Pearl, and Frontenac.
- Over in Arnprior, Mallard’s Milk Bar has opened a storefront on John Street North. the ottawan loved us some Mallard’s from their old-timey ice-cream cart when we visited Cold Bear Brewing last spring. Mallard’s change up their flavours weekly and while we’re curious about the Sea Buckthorn Sorbet, nothing will stop us from ordering the Newfoundland Sea Salt and Cookie Dough.
- Up in Eganville, vegetarian Kathryn Stuart has a new career raising Icelandic chickens and Icelandic sheep. Both critters were kept by the Vikings and their genetics kept isolated from the rest of the world for 1,000 years.
- The Boathouse Café is a new café, bed and breakfast and event space on the Rideau Canal in Burritts Rapids.
- Dominion City Brewing is bringing back one of the first beers it ever made – Earl Grey Marmalade Saison. You can get it in Dominion City’s taproom or online.
- Peter Hum at the Ottawa Citizen went seeking vegan treats at Yes! Mama Kitchen. It's nominally a Vietnamese restaurant – and it does have meat dishes. Hum found great flavours in the vegan General Tso's ‘chicken’ and meatless Bahn Mi sandwiches.

🚊 O Train - The Confederation Line will add more carriages if the demand is there. This would be an unremarkable thing on most transit systems, adding more carriages as traffic rises, but the O Train is a special case.
