🚨 Ottawa Police Service Board meeting

Some tidbits from yesterday’s Police Services Board meeting:

• Chief Eric Stubbs said the reason he submitted an increased Police Service budget was because it had been decreasing as a proportion of the City’s expenditures over the years. Horizon Ottawa points out that the Police budget’s share has in fact increased from 7.7 per cent in 2001 to 9.3 per cent in 2022.
• Stubbs said that there would be zero tolerance for any future vehicle-based protests by the Convoy.
• The Board approved spending $1.4 million for 275 tasers and 8,000 cartridges. It also waived through spending $178 million for a new station in Barrhaven.
• The vote on excluding the public from making presentations to the board will be in late February.

🚊 Them’s the brakes

• Yesterday’s three-hour disruptions on the O Train at Lyon, Pimisi, and Bayview stations was because of a faulty brake. The train stopped outside Tunney’s Pasture station, where passengers had to be evacuated down the track. OC Transpo says brake faults are common. (CBC)

🏒 FISU

• Team Canada took home gold in women’s hockey at the FISU World Winter University Games in Lake Placid. University of Ottawa student Aurélie Dubuc was one of three goaltenders, and the Gee Gee’s women’s hockey assistant coach and head scout Greg Bowles did double duty as Team Canada’s coach. (Martin Cleary in Ottawa Sports Pages)
