HELLO OTTAWA

Ottawa Tourism is looking for the perfect romcom script for a 5 – 15 minute long short film centred around the holidays. We’re assuming holidays means winter and Christmas and such – nobody is looking for a May 2-4 romantic farce.

Ottawa Tourism says ‘we wish to film a movie-of-the- week-style short film that features Ottawa and positions the city itself as a movie character. The goal is to ultimately inspire viewers to travel to Ottawa to experience the holiday magic firsthand. Think what New York City is to Sex and the City’.

We’d suggest a period piece, Breakfast at Ogilvys. Or maybe Westboro Side Story. Sleepless in Stittsville?

There are some guardrails, though.

‘With this project we are leaning into the kitsch and stereotypes of holiday-style comfort viewing. But there are some Ottawa stereotypes to be avoided including any disrespectful representation of Canada or the RCMP. Taking a political approach or referencing Ottawa as boring or formally boring. Any pitch idea that includes disrespectful or prejudicial depictions of people, groups, places, governments, or organizations will not be considered.’

You don’t have to make the film, just write it. If you think you have the chops, you have until July 2 to send in a pitch. And yes, the chosen scriptwriter gets paid.

Details are on this PDF.

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

đŸ« Plouffe Park

  •  A new plan sees both Plouffe Park saved and a new French school built in Kitchissippi ward. A previous plan to build the school on the parkland drew ire from the community over the loss of their greenspace. The school will now be built next to the Plant recreation center in the same general vicinity. (Kitchissippi Times)

➕ Related Housing charity Ottawa Salus is suing its insurer for $55 million, accusing it of insufficiently paying for a 2023 flood that displaced all tenants.

đŸ„… Ottawa Black Bears

  •  Ottawa’s new professional lacrosse team is seeking players and coaches. Minor league players can register here or come to the National Lacrosse League qualifiers in Ottawa July 19 to 21. Coaches can apply here. (Toula Mazloum at CTV)

đŸ—ïž Anishinabe Algonquin Nation

  •  The Anishinabe Algonquin Nation has made an agreement with the Federal government for a new building in the Parliamentary precinct. The parking lot next to the Indigenous Peoples Space at 100 Wellington Street will be the site of a building to celebrate Algonquin culture. The Anishinabe Algonquin Nation was left out of consultations for the Indigenous Peoples Space in 2017 when the former US embassy was turned over to the MĂ©tis National Council, the Inuit Tapirit Kanatami, and the Assembly of First Nations. (Olivia Stephanovitch at CBC)

🚧 Highway 417

  •  Eastbound lanes of Highway 417 are closed at Vankleek Hill after drivers reported structural concerns at the Aberdeen Street overpass. An Ontario Provincial Police officer said ‘the pavement appeared the be “buckling”’. The Ministry of Transportation is diverting drivers onto county roads while it investigates. (Ottawa Citizen)

🚕 Taxi Class Action

  •  A lawyer with the team that successfully won a $215 million class action suit against the City suggests a per-ride charge to pay for it. Lawyer Thomas Conway suggests a small fee be added to each Uber or taxi ride to go into a fund to pay the damages to the taxi owners. The court ruled that the City did not follow its own guidelines when it allowed ride sharing apps to operate in Ottawa. (Elyse Skura at CBC)
