- American chain Crumbl Cookies will open in Nepean at College Square Mall this summer. Circle of life, we suppose. Cookie stores return to vogue, then it will be cupcakes again, followed by muffins, maybe? Muffins haven’t had the spotlight for a while.
- Good news for Ministry of Coffee on Wellington fans, the location has reopened today – they said – after it was closed for a few days due to a plumbing issue.
- Ameya Charnalia at Eat the Strip likes the late night vibes of Chai Talks in Carlington. Charnalia says maggi is the Mac and Cheese of India, and Chai Talks prepares it just like the street vendors do.
- It looks like Peter Hum at the Ottawa Citizen is stepping on Eat the Strip’s toes with visits to food trucks in his search for the best smash burger. Hum declares Smash Daddy on Preston as his favourite, but bookmarked the innovative ideas like the horseradish-and-truffle aioli burger at Embrun’s Pearson Street Smash Burgers N’ Melts. He also enjoyed the real diner ambiance of Edinburger, but didn’t have much to say about Smash Burgers Ottawa.
- In Apt 613’s Best Bites, Kiersten Vuorimaki, working alone this fortnight, recommends Wes’ Chips (An ottawan favourite) in Arnprior, Ten Toes Coffee House (Vuorimaki had the best sandwich she’s ever had, with ‘smoked cheddar, at least 3 pieces of thiccc bacon, caramelized red onion, tomato pepper jam, arugula, garlic mayo, and a perfectly fried egg’.), and For God Shakes (A second location of the showstopping milkshake purveyor has opened on Bank Street.).

📋 Agenda | WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT | - The Tweet above is a great explanation of development charges, currently being debated at City Hall. (h/t Neil Saravanamuttoo). Jamie is pointing out that the vast majority of new developments will be within the greenbelt, yet most of the new infrastructure built will be to service sprawl.
Development charges are the set fees charged to new developments to pay for roads, sewers, libraries, and parks, etc. In the past few days, developers have been freaking out over reports that the City will charge an average of $12,000 to new homes and who would ever pay that? Neil Saravanamuttoo points out that those roads, sewers, libraries, and parks, etc. will be built regardless, the only question is who pays: developers or property owners at large. The City’s Planning and Housing Committee is discussing the matter today. 🏠 Tiny Homes 💥 University of Ottawa - The New York Post is making fun of University of Ottawa protestors who spelt ‘Palestine’ wrong when they graffitied Tabaret Hall. The protestors spay painted ‘Free Palastine’ across the steps of the hall. An image of it was used in American rapper Macklemore’s video ‘Hind’s Hall’, which has been viewed more than 13 million times. (Ronny Reyes in the New York Post)
➕ Related After consulting with Ottawa Police, the City will raise the flag of Israel on its national day without the customary ceremony. The police warned of a risk to public safety on May 14. With Global Affairs Canada, the City has flag raising events for 190 countries. ❗ Emergency Alert - Those in Québec or whose cell phones connect to towers on that side of the river will be getting an emergency alert test at 1:55 pm today. Every province and territory in Canada is holding the test – except Ontario, which will test the system on May 15. (Natalie Stechyson at CBC)
🧊 Highway 417 - The Ontario Provincial Police are looking for the owner of a truck that lost a fridge on Highway 417 near Vanier. No one was injured in the fridge drop Monday, but there were several collissions. (Alex Black at CityNews)
