HELLO OTTAWA

Darren is finally back in Ottawa.

While Martha was here, enduring an ice-storm and a heatwave, plus several days of no power, Darren was living the high life in Vancouver, eating sushi and, oh, playing frisbee golf, and probably wearing bike shorts to every meeting, like all West Coasters are prone to do, we understand.

Now properly in Ottawa, it‘s in bed by 10, up at 6, and lunch at your desk, right Darren?

Number

  • $1,000,000
  • – The amount of money that Bruce McConville says he burned in 2020 to avoid giving money to his ex-wife in their divorce. The judge sentenced McConville to 30 days in jail to rethink that story. McConville held a fundraiser last Saturday at the Eastview Legion in Vanier to help pay his considerable legal bills. (Gary Dimmock in the Ottawa Citizen)

🚨 Warrantless

  • Gatineau wants to suspend warrants that could lead to the jailing of 300 homeless persons. Twice per year, the Ville de Gatineau has applied to the Québec courts for writs of imprisonment for those who have not paid their municipal fines. Under Québec law, the court is not supposed to issue the imprisonment writs to those who are unable to pay their fines, however, it did so anyway. The City of Gatineau is now asking for the suspension of writs that itself requested, to the court that should not have issued them.  (CBC)

🔌 Electric Cars

  • One of the new City-owned electric car charging stations, the one on Lycée Place, was used only 65 times in 2022. The City installed chargers on 16 sites, with varying results. The City Hall charger was used the most at 908 times. (CBC)

🛻 Convoy Jerry Cans

  • A man charged with mischief for filling jerry cans with gas during the Convoy siege was acquitted at trial. The judge ruled the Crown failed to prove its case, citing ‘crummy’ notes and not informing the man of his rights to a lawyer by the charging police officer. The man had filled jerry cans at a Convoy street filling station and took them away in a child’s red wagon. (Gary Dimmock in the Ottawa Citizen)
