  • – Kitchissippi resident Mayor Mark Sutcliffe announcing a new emergency shelter task force. The City fears that existing shelters may be overwhelmed this year with new residents, with the task force intended to be able to task action quickly when needed to find new shelters. WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

📻 CityNews Ottawa

  •  Ottawa’s oldest radio station shut down yesterday. CityNews Ottawa 1310 am was closed suddenly by owner Rogers Media, citing declining audiences and low revenue. The all news station had also simulcasted on 101.1 fm from Perth, with that station now going back to its previous country music format. The ottawa.citynews.ca website will continue to be updated with a staff of two, the same number of staff as the ottawan. One hundred and one years ago, the station initially signed on air as CKCO. (Catherine Morrison in the Ottawa Citizen

🏒 Women’s Professional Hockey League

  •  It’s possible that the new Women’s Professional Hockey League team in Ottawa will resurrect a name from 1915, Ottawa Alert. A trademark application shows that the League is attempting to trademark Toronto Torch, Montreal Echo, Minnesota Superior, Boston Wicked, New York Sound, and Ottawa Alert, which was a women’s hockey team that played 1915 to 1940. A trademark application doesn’t mean that these will be the final team names but it does really, really annoy Darren who had planned to add Ottawa Alert as one of our Historic Logo T-Shirts last year, then never got around to it. (Karissa Donkin at CBC Sports) (History of Ottawa Alerts)

🏒 The Sens

  •  A player for the Ottawa Senators has been suspended for sports betting. Centre Shane Pinto has been suspended for 41 games after apologing to the team and fans for ‘sports wagering’. It’s unknown what Pinto bet on but there is no evidence he bet on National Hockey League teams. Pinto hasn’t actually been on the ice this year as he is in a contract dispute with the team. (TSN)

🚧 Laurier Avenue

📘 Icons

  •  We have mentioned the new book, Where We Ate: A Field Guide to Canada’s Restaurants, Past and Present by Newfoundland writer Gabby Peyton, before but here is a new article that mentions BeaverTails. (Liza Agrba in Maclean’s)
