• St Joe’s Women's Centre needs help after a burst pipe flooded its building. Not only is there five inches of water on the floor, the pipe burst in such a way as to shoot water into the second floor and into the walls.
• A damage expert estimates that the restoration cost will be between $30,000 and $50,000. It could be weeks before it can reopen to homeless women and children.
• The Centre has posted an Amazon wishlist for items it needs for sessions, kids, and hygiene. Cash donations can be made here.

•  Odd Burger’s first Ottawa franchise is opening at 1050 Bank, with a Grand Opening event this Saturday (June 29) from noon to 4:00 pm. The purveyor of ‘iconic fast food made vegan’ which has locations across Ontario, Albert, and BC, also produces vegetarian versions of burgers, ‘chickUn’, breakfast items, and sides. 
•  Grounded departs its Centretown location after 14 years this Friday June 28. After that you’ll find the beloved restaurant and coffee house at their 1545 Carling Ave spot.
•  Chef Yannick Anton received the L’Ordre du Merite Agricole at the French embassy last Thursday for his contributions to the culinary industry. The Nice native now teaches at Le Cordon Bleu. 
•  After 48 years, Le Pied de Cochon in Gatineau is closing Saturday. As owner and chef Guy Mervellet is only 79 years old, works six days per week, and hasn’t had a vacation in six or seven years, this seems like an incredibly selfish move on his part say his loyal patrons. 
•  Merry Dairy can once again sell tubs of ice cream in other shops. In 2022, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food forced Merry Dairy to stop wholesaling its ice cream as the shop was not a ‘dairy plant’ under the Milk Act. Under the act, dairy plants require massive amounts of equipment and oversight and do not contemplate small ice cream shops distributing their wares.  
•  American cookie chain Crumbl Cookies opens its first Ottawa franchise this Friday at College Square Mall in Nepean. Those with the app can use code ONNEPEAN to get a free chocolate chip cookie starting on July 1.
•  Ameya Charnalia at Eat the Strip says Sherwood Market & Deli’s signature BBQ chicken, bacon and avocado sandwich is ‘the quintessential blue collar Ottawa sandwich’. And at $8, no wonder there is a line-up down the aisle.
•  Owner/bartender Witek Wojaczek vows that his new William Street cocktail joint, Bar Ocelli, will break Ottawa’s seven year drought of making Canada’s Best Bar list.
•  In Kiersten Vuorimaki’s Apt 613 Best Bites column, she eats at Sammi & Soupe Dumpling (‘sexy cool vibes in the heritage building’), Pop’s Paninis (‘I’m sure it was the size of an iPad’), and Courage Cookies (‘They’re chewy and rich, and the salt on the chocolate chunk was the perfect touch that I didn’t know I’d been missing in other cookies’).
•  Peter Hum in the Ottawa Citizen has an insider-y account of the staff mutiny at Buvette Daphnée that caused it to close in early June. 
  We have run several items from design publications on the beautiful interior of Buvette Daphnée, and how the resto had made Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants list.
  
  Hum says the brouhaha started with management wanting to fire a server in order to hire her boyfriend, a chef. Ownership has a rule against couples working together. Several staff walked out that night, resulting in the resto unable to open. Three days later, most staff quit.
  
  At this time, Buvette Daphnée is still closed.

• – The two grade 12 students at Merivale High School have created a software programme that finds the safest routes for pedestrians and cars using historic accident data. 🛫 Ottawa International Airport

•  Air Canada has a new route to Tulum, Mexico this winter. Air Canada is increasing frequencies on some winter routes, flying twice per week to Tampa, four per week to Orlando, and six per week to Fort Lauderdale, and four to Punta Cana. The new Tulum route will fly weekly. (Pax News)

💥 Cars Driving into Houses

•  A fourth car has driven into a house this month. This one was in Coulson Court in Kanata, yesterday. The others were Deerfield Drive near Algonquin College last Friday, and a double home-crash day June 7 on Allanford Avenue and Uplands Drive. When we first started publishing the ottawan in 2020, we commented at the time that there seemed to be an unusual number of vehicles crashing into buildings in Ottawa.
