HELLO OTTAWA

There are a number of spending items in today’s Federal budget regarding civil servants, according to the Ottawa Citizen.

1️⃣ Training, anti-racism measures, and mental health support for Black employees

2️⃣ Funding for employees who have experienced harassment and discrimination

3️⃣ More money thrown at the Phoenix pay system

4️⃣ Funding for leave after the loss, death, or disappearance of a child

5️⃣ Reducing the amount of work contracted out

6️⃣ Reducing the budget of most departments by three per cent.

Additionally, the National Arts Centre, the Canadian Museum of Nature in Centretown, the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau and the National Museum of Science and Technology will see some top up funding.

💥 Ottawa Carleton District School Board

• Tension is high over tonight’s meeting of the Ottawa Carleton District School Board. At the last meeting, a parent wanted to speak about the Board’s mixed-sex washroom policy for students and was cut off by trustee Dr. Nili Kaplan-Myrth. Police were later called. Tonight’s meeting is expected to have delegations from parties who think the parent should be able to speak and those who think it was right for him to be cut off. (Joanne Laucius in the Ottawa Citizen)
  
  ➕Related Before the Board had a second online petition asking for the removal of Kaplan-Myrth taken down, Kaplan-Myrth tweeted that anyone who signed the petition knew that they were publicly endorsing a hate crime. A lawyer, who had signed the petition, sent a preliminary letter accusing the doctor of defamation. Kaplan-Myrth then removed the offending tweet, and the lawyer removed his.

🌉 Champlain Bridge

• Hull-Aylmer MP Greg Fergus has launched a petition to open two lanes of traffic over the Champlain Bridge during construction. Right now, it's only one lane of alternating traffic resulting in rush hour congestion. Construction is planned to end in November. (Josh Pringle at CTV) (The Petition)

🎻 National Arts Centre orchestra

• The Finnish musician John Storgårds has signed on for another five years as the principal guest conductor of the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Storgårds is also chief conductor of the BBC Philharmonic.  (Lynn Saxburg in the Ottawa Citizen)

🍼 Surrogacy Suit

• An Ottawa teacher is filing a human rights complaint against the Ontario Teachers Insurance plan after being turned down for in vitro fertilization funding. The teacher is a gay man, and he and his husband are expecting a baby girl in May from a surrogate mother. The Insurance Plan does not consider a surrogate mother to be an eligible dependent. (Joseph Tunney at CBC) 

🚏 Rural Transport 

• The survey for rural Ottawa residents about buses is now open. Rural Transportation Solutions for Ottawa has been working for about two years to develop a comprehensive proposal for improving transportation options available to residents of rural Ottawa. This podcast interviewing Matthew Hayes, researcher, filmmaker, and educator at Northern Lakes College, about his highly-acclaimed book, Search for the Unknown: Canada’s UFO Files and the Rise of Conspiracy Theory is pretty good. The Ottawa connection is Wilbur Smith, who ran his own UFO investigation, Project Magnets from 1950 to 1954, ostensibly under the auspices of the Department of Transport.
