Today's Ottawa Police Services Board has a couple of very contentious items on the agenda (PDF).

The first is the restriction of public delegations. If you look at the PDF, you can see that even the agenda item is obfuscated. Rather than call it ‘Public Delegation procedure update’ or something, it is itemized as ‘Notice of Motion: Amendment to Procedure By-Law No. 3 of 2014 (to be considered at 27 February 2023 meeting)’.

Yes, that is actually how restricting public delegations is listed on the agenda.

The second item is a plan to build a new $178 million station in Barrhaven. Capital Ward councillor Shawn Menard (Not Mendez! Not Mendez!) points out that the City spends only $15 million annually on new affordable housing, $120 million on Ottawa Public Health, and $56 million for Libraries.

The Ottawa Police Faciliites Strategic Plan Refresh [PDF] says the new station is needed bcause ‘It is expected that the City of Ottawa will grow by more than 1.4 million residents over the next 25 years, according to the City’s Official Plan’.

Ottawa Lookout points out that the Ottawa Official plan actually says ‘the population of the city is expected to grow to more than 1.4 million’. That makes the Ottawa Police off by a million people.

The Police Board meeting will be held at 4 pm today. You can watch it on Zoom here.

  • The Treasury Board and the Public Service Alliance of Canada may or may not have agreed to mediation. The Board says that the Alliance‘s Technical Services Group, which represents 11,000 civil servants, have agreed to the appointment of a mediator. The Alliance says yes, it agreed to the appointment, but only if there was a return to the bargaining table – which has not happened. The Alliance is asking for a 13.5 per cent raise over three years, the Treasury Board is offering 8.5 per cent over four years. (Andrew Duffy in the Ottawa Citizen)
