HELLO OTTAWA

Today’s the day you can create your wish list for swimming and other City recreation programmes.

The recreation website register.ottawa.ca opens today, where you can browse summer recreation programmes and swimming lessons and bookmark them on the system.

Can you register for any of them today? Oh no, for that you need to wait until May 14 at 9:00 pm (!) for swimming and May 16, also at 9:00 pm, for everything else. But you can window shop today.

– Martha and Darren

📋 Agenda

WHAT OTTAWA IS TALKING ABOUT

đŸŽ™ïž Federal Public Employees

  • The Federal Government expects employees to be in the office three days per week this autumn. The Public Service Alliance of Canada and the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada were caught by surprise, relying on the belief that employees were only expected to come in two days per week. The news has not been made publicly but was confirmed to Le Droit by a source. (Stu Mills at CBC)

Another interpreter has been injured in the House of Commons.
The injury, which occured April 8, has been called the Larsen Effect – a microphone and headphones get too close causing a sharp noise that can permanently injure someone. The Canadian Association of Professional Employees says the employee has been off for weeks. (Dylan Robertson at CBC)

🚆 Pardon me boys, is that the Centre of the Universe Choo Choo?

  •  VIA Rail has launched a new Ottawa – Toronto service that gets passengers into the city before 9:00 am. Train 641 will leave Ottawa at 4:19 am and arrive at Toronto’s Union station at 8:48 am, Monday to Thursday. The new service begins May 27. The early afternoon Train 644, which travels to Toronto Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will increase to seven days per week also on May 27. (Natasha O’Neill at CityNews)

🌳 Parks

  •  City Councillor proposes to rename park after Mary Papatsie. Rideau-Vanier ward councillor StĂ©phanie Plante has received positive responses from the neighbourhood and the parents of Mary Papatsie to rename Emond Park in Vanier. Papatsie was 39 when she disappeared in 2017, her remains were found in a construction site in 2022. Existing City policy would not allow the park to be renamed, as the policy does not permit memorials. (Anchal Sharma at CBC)
