On May 1, the BCIT Women in Engineering (WiE) student club welcomed high school students from across Metro Vancouver to the third annual Spend a Day event at the BCIT Burnaby Campus. This initiative encourages women and gender-diverse youth to explore pathways in engineering by connecting them with BCIT faculty, students, and hands-on lab experiences across multiple disciplines—from Civil and Mechanical to Environmental and Electrical Engineering. While women now make up about 19% of engineering professionals in Canada, events like this—organized by WiE Club President Minh Tran and supported by BCIT School of Construction and the Environment (SOCE) Business Development Manager, Marita Luk, the BCIT SOCE marketing team, and BCIT High School Partnership Manager Carol Martina—aim to increase that number through mentorship, exposure, and inspiration. Mark Angelo, renowned river conservationist and incoming BCIT Honorary Doctor of Technology, led BCIT's annual chum salmon release at Guichon Creek—joined by students, children from the BCIT Student Association (BCITSA) Childcare Centre, and distinguished guests. The day began with Mark reading The Little Creek That Could, a story inspired by Guichon Creek’s transformation from pollution to restoration. Together, the group released 15,000 young salmon into the creek, joined by BC Minister Randene Neill and Paul Choi, MLA 🇨🇦. Thousands of future electrical trades students will gain hands-on training in emerging fields such as renewable energy, robotics, and automated controls, thanks to the new Mott Electric Pavilion. Made possible by a transformational $2 million donation from Mott Electric, the Pavilion will play a critical role in expanding access to electrical apprenticeship training, creating over 250 new seats annually to help meet the growing demand for skilled electricians and tradespeople in BC. #TBT In April, BCIT welcomed over 100 students from Lena Shaw Elementary for a day of hands-on exploration in activities related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The full day was filled with discovery, creativity, joy, and excitement for the young learners. From creating unique 3D models to assembling a miniature powerhouse and making ice cream with nitrogen, students explored exciting stations hosted by the BCIT School of Energy and the Centre for Applied Research & Innovation (CARI). These activities planted seeds of curiosity in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. This experience was made possible through the support of The Cmolik Foundation, whose long-standing partnership with the Institute continues to open doors for young learners interested in pursuing their academic goals.
