AIR SAFETY COLUMN

Spatial disorientation: not just for others!

Spatial disorientation is the wrong perception of your position and movement relative to the ground. Simply put, every time the instruments tell you something and your body tells you something different, you suffer from spatial disorientation.

For example, you can see a bend on your instruments, but feel straight and level, or vice versa (like in the photo). These senses can cause you to use the commands to "correct" a flight attitude that does not exist, and eventually lead to loss of control. Any conditions that deprive a pilot of natural and visual references allowing him to maintain orientation can quickly lead to spatial disorientation.

We tend to think that the lack of visual reference means clouds, but several other situations can create disorientation. Being in the clouds can be very problematic, but fog, darkness, or blurred terrain (such as flying over water) or a snowy surface on a cloudy day can create conditions that lead to to disorientation.

Obviously, the best is to plan your outings well in order to avoid these situations. But in the event that this happens to you, only your instruments will allow you to get out of it. You have all received instrument flight training. But it may be a long time. These few hours are there to teach you the basics, and give you enough to keep you in control of the plane in an emergency. And yes, a flight in IFR weather conditions for a pilot with only VFR skills constitutes an emergency. And do not delude yourself that you can, with these few hours of training, maintain control for a long time. It is often said that you will have 176 seconds to live if this happens to you. It is therefore strongly advised, because it does not happen only to others,

Prizes for the competition

Annual winner: gift coupon $ 75 plus
2nd and 3rd annual trophy : gift coupon $ 25 plus trophy
Monthly winners: Cap or polo shirt or gift coupons $ 10

Gift coupons can be accumulated over the year. In order to allow everyone to have the chance to win during the year, the same person cannot be declared the winner of the month more than four (4) times in the year. Monthly and annual gift coupons are cumulative for a maximum possibility of $ 105

For a monthly round to be held, you must have received at least five photos, from at least three different photographers (new in 2018). Otherwise, the photos received are entered in the round for the following month. The total number of photos in the final remains at 20.

The winning photos of the month and the photos with the most “likes” during the year (up to a total of 20) will be judged subsequently to determine the three winning photos.

To participate

Any photo submitted must be accompanied by the following information:

  • First and last name of member submitting photo
  • Membership number (in good standing)
  • First and last name of the person who took the photo (ATTENTION) if this person is not the member transmitting the photo, you certify by submitting the photo that the author is aware and agrees to participate in the contest.)
  • The member must also certify that the photographer does not have the status of a professional photographer (photography does not earn him more than 50% of his annual income)
  • Photo title

  • The photographer authorizes the contest coordinator to crop my photo, as far as possible, in case the horizon is visibly crooked.

The "usual" corrections made in post-processing (slight color correction, cropping, straightening, slight filtering to increase the sharpness ...) are accepted. Excessive handling may be refused by the administrator of the competition, who will then request that the photo be resubmitted after "normalization" of the retouching parameters.

The photographer authorizes Aviateurs.Québec to use the photos sent in the context of the competition for his publications (L'Aviateur and L'Aviateur Express reviews, website, Facebook page, Flickr album and other official publications of Aviateurs.Québec) . This partial transfer of rights implies that the photographer remains fully owner of the rights to the photos transmitted and that they can be used by their author at any time for publication, distribution or other in any other media or platform broadcast.

The photographer must transmit his files in high resolution. Photos smaller than 1024 pixels wide (landscape format) or tall (portrait format) cannot be accepted.

Please note: In the past, we had to refuse photos, often sent by iPhone, in too small a format. Please make sure that you take and transmit your photos in high resolution format.

Important note: all members in good standing of Aviateurs.Québec (registered or not on Facebook) can participate in the contest.
