Approaches to Engaging with Indigenous Communities in Science Field-Based Learning Experiences: Lessons and Impact

We are delighted to welcome our new IBioS Program Coordinator, Dr. Conny Scheffler!

Conny Scheffler is the Program Coordinator for the Interdisciplinary Biodiversity Solutions Collaboratory (IBioS). She is responsible for program administration and supporting the development of new research and training collaborations. Conny has extensive experience in academic administration, research and coaching. She holds a doctoral degree in geoinformatics and hydrology from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany). She was previously the Graduate Pathways to Success Manager at the Faculty for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. In her free time, you can find Conny preparing for her next race, deep into books about art and graphic design or doodling away on her own art.

The IBioS Collaboratory's First Grant: 2024/2025 GCRC Success!

We are thrilled to announce that IBioS has been successful in the 2024/25 GCRC Competition!

Collaborative coexistence for people and nature

How do we manage landscapes jointly for wildlife and people? Urbanization and agricultural expansion threaten biodiversity through habitat destruction. However, communities benefit from proximity to nature: urban-dwellers gain recreation and health benefits, while farmers depends on species like pollinators. Promoting biodiversity in populous regions like Metro Vancouver can help secure those benefits, but may also enhance encounters and conflicts between peoples and wildlife. This research cluster will tackle these complex trade-offs through partner-based research with diverse stakeholders and key decision-makers, aimed at designing inclusive and effective conservation solutions to benefit people and nature alike.
