Emergency Preparedness Week

Being prepared is important and something the whole family can do. With Emergency Preparedness Week taking place from May 4 to May 10, the City of Nanaimo is encouraging residents to prepare for an emergency by making a kit, drafting a plan and signing up for the City's Voyent Alert! emergency notification system.

This year’s theme, “In it Together,” highlights the importance of collective action. While we can’t prevent natural disasters, we can reduce their impact by being ready. Emergencies can happen anytime, and being prepared helps protect yourself, your loved ones and your community.

Here are three simple steps everyone can take:

  • Know the risks – Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to our community and our region can help you better prepare
  • Make a plan – It will help you and your family know what to do
  • Get an emergency kit – During an emergency, we will all need some basic supplies. We may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency

For more information about how you can prepare for emergencies and to make a kit, visit www.nanaimo.ca/goto/emergencykit or the Province of BC website www.preparedbc.ca.

Online Schedules

Stay active and connected with the City of Nanaimo’s recreation offerings - online schedules are available for swimming, skating, weight rooms, gymnasiums, and pottery programs.

DROP-IN SCHEDULES

Back-in Angle Parking

Ever heard of back-in angle parking? Similar to other angle parking, the spots are designed to make parking easier. The difference? The angle is reversed and designed to simplify back-in parking. This creates a much safer experience when leaving (it's generally easier to pull forward out of a space than to back into oncoming traffic). The City has a section of back-in angle parking at Port Place Shopping Centre and another coming at Harewood Centennial Park.

Recycling 101

How’s your recycling knowledge? Did you know that cardboard boxes should be flattened and cut into pieces that are 2 ft by 2 ft (60 cm x 60 cm) before going into your blue cart? This will make space for more items in your cart and make it easier for all recyclables to get into the truck on collection day.

Learn more Recycling 101 tips on the Recycling page on the City website.
