Province declares State of Emergency

The Government of BC has declared a provincial state of emergency in response to extreme, fast-moving wildfire activity. With this declaration comes restrictions on non-essential travel to the central Interior and southeastern BC. These restrictions were put in place to give wildfire crews the space they need to keep us safe. If you must travel, stay alert to the rapidly changing situations at www.EmergencyInfoBC.gov.bc.ca and DriveBC.ca. In addtion, smoke from these fires are expected to come and go on the island as the wind shifts. Stay updated on air quality by visiting Environment Canada's website.

Build an emergency kit and grab-and-go bag on a budget

It's a good time to make sure you and your family are prepared for an emergency. The Province offers ideas on ways to build your own emergency kit and grab-and-go bags on a budget in the event of an emergency. They also have a guide on drafting your own emergency plan along with a fill-in the blank plan you can download.

City and RDN looking for more ways to support home retrofits

The City of Nanaimo and Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) are looking for input from homeowners on home energy retrofits. This survey aims to collect feedback on ways that the City and the RDN can help homeowners pay for home energy improvements, such as installing energy-efficient windows, upgrading home heating and cooling systems, adding insulation or installing solar panels.

Shop the Car Trunk Sale at VIU

The second and final Car Trunk sale takes place this Saturday, Aug. 26 from 9 am to 2 pm in Vancouver Island University's Parking Lot A.

Anyone looking for a bargain or a unique buy can join up to 150 vendors selling used items from the trunk of their cars at this free event.

Recycling depots

Did you know? While plastic bags, plastic wrap, glass and Styrofoam aren't accepted in your blue cart, they are happily accepted at Nanaimo's recycling depots! Our trucks can't take them because they need to be handled separately from other recyclable items. There are two Regional Recycling depots in Nanaimo:

Help us reduce recycling contamination! Use the What Goes Where tool in the Nanaimo Recycling app (available for free on the AppStore and Google Play).

Aquatic Centre annual maintenance shutdown

The NAC Pool and Weight Room will be closed for annual maintenance from Monday, Aug. 21 until Sunday, Sept. 17.  Along with a deep clean and inspection of the pools, work includes updates to the lobby to assist the flow of customers for the dressing rooms and gym and inspection and maintenance of many other pieces of equipment as needed.

Did you know? It takes several days to drain the pool before crews can thouroughly inspect them and perform any needed maintenance. It then takes a few days to fill the pool pools and bring them back up to temperature.

See the Beban Pool Interim Schedule for swimming options during this time.
