WorkBC Centre – Vancouver Midtown
Monthly Newsletter

February 2023

Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to show love and appreciation, not just for romantic relationships, but for our own self-worth. As we recognize this special day of love and friendship, WorkBC Midtown wants to remind you that it's also important to take care of yourself and practice self-love. To help you make Valentine’s Day a truly meaningful experience for yourself as well as those around you, here are some tips on how to practice self-care:

  • Give yourself permission to take breaks - find activities that help relieve stress (such as yoga or meditation) or allow yourself some quiet time away from your daily routine.
  • Pamper yourself - Treating yourself to a spa day or indulging in small luxuries like buying new clothes or taking a hot bath can go a long way in boosting your mood and creating positive vibes around you.
  • Spend quality time with loved ones - Connecting with someone who cares deeply about us lifts our spirits; it also reinforces our belief that we are worthy of love and connection.

  • Exercise regularly - Exercise releases endorphins (happy hormones), which have been proven to help relieve stress and improve mood. Plus it is great for overall physical health!
  • Take the time to unplug: Disconnecting from technology helps us to be more mindful of the present moment which boosts creativity, reduces stress levels, and increases productivity in the long run.
  • Practice gratitude – Being grateful for all that we have helps us appreciate ourselves more deeply; it also shifts our focus from negative feelings toward positive emotions

Inclusive Hiring Fair January 2023

We held an Inclusive Job Fair in mid-January, which attracted more than 400 attendees. It was an incredible event filled with energy and excitement as participants of all different backgrounds gathered together to explore career opportunities, meet employers, and get valuable information on the job market.

There were plenty of opportunities for networking, with each organization having time to discuss their positions available. Attendees got a chance to meet face-to-face and build relationships that could potentially lead to a career move.

We're excited that everyone had such a great time at this Job Fair and we look forward to seeing you all again soon! We'd like to share some of our favorite photos with you here:

CLIENT SUCCESS STORY

Sara’s story: "I could not have done it without the support and confidence of the WorkBC staff"

In the summer of 2022, I left my job of 10 years to look for a new career path. As I was looking to fill in some gaps in my skills and learn about technology, I was set on taking the NPower JITA program at the advice of WorkBC staff. Rebecca Lee, my case manager, assisted with my application for EI while attending the program. Once the course was near completion, she also was quick to coordinate mock interview practice with other members of your staff. Craig Elworthy conducted my last mock interview. His professional yet relaxed approach helped me to prepare for a behavioral interview with Telus. As a result, I got the job, and the hiring manager said my behavior interview was "Awesome!". I could not have done it without the support and confidence of the Work BC staff.
