Bad Art Gala

Saturday, June 25, 2022 | 2:00-3:30 pm

A free program for kids (8+) and teens, presented by our Teen Advisory Group.

Join us for an afternoon of creating horrible art! The challenge is to make the tackiest piece of art you can in 45 minutes, using the library’s ugliest craft supplies. Then, check out other participants' work and vote for your “least” favourite. Whoever receives the most votes will win a prize. Leave your good taste at home, and do your worst!

Registration required. Call the Library at (604) 947-9788 to register.

Summer Reading Club Starts June 15!

What is SRC?

BC Summer Reading Club is a free literacy program that encourages reading throughout the summer and engages children (ages 5-14 years old). Summer Reading Club is a fun, educational, inclusive and community-oriented program that began over 30 years ago. This year's programs will include crafts, games, activities, and more!

This year’s BC Summer Reading Club community and connection-based theme is called All Together Now! It features artwork by Vancouver-based illustrator and artist Elaine Chen.

How to Register

SRC includes a 50 day reading challenge where kids track their reading for 50 days to win a medal at the end of the summer! Throughout the 50 day challenge kids can collect stickers at the Library for every 7 days of reading and enter draws for prizes. Come register and pick up your booklet starting June 15th.

Our weekly SRC programs will begin in July so be sure to sign up for the SRC newsletter (select the Summer Reading Club box on the form) to get reminders and updates.

BC SRC Online

Like in recent years, you can also participate online with the BC SRC reading tracker app and weekly online activities, videos, contests, quizzes, and more. Click here to find out more and sign up for SRC Online.

Bowen Library @ ISABC Pride

Bowen Library joined Island Pacific School as they kicked off Pride Season with their multi-school Pride event in the BowFest field on June 1.

Library staff got to connect with students from IPS and other Independent Schools Association of BC schools' Gender and Sexuality Alliance clubs.

Students from each of the schools hosted their own Pride activities, including photo stations, flag-making, nail-painting, cookie-decorating, and lots of games. At the Library table, students got to design and make their own Pride buttons, browse books, quiz themselves on all the pride flags, and take home our Pride booklists.

Our thanks to IPS for inviting us to their fantastic event!

Anyone can pick up our bookmark-sized Pride reading lists for Kids and Teens at the Library, or access them online. See our "Featured This Month" section below for links to our online booklists, and come see our Pride Month displays in the Library this June.

People shopping for books at the BICS gym book sale

Thanks for Another Fabulous BookFest!

After a pandemic pause, BookFest returned this recent May long weekend to throngs of eager readers. Organized by volunteers as a fundraiser for the Library, the sale's funds support many special projects.

Our thanks goes out to the Friends of the Bowen Island Library Society and their group of volunteers for making this much-loved sale happen once more, to the shoppers who filled their bags and boxes in support of the Library, and to the many book donors.

If you missed BookFest and love quality used books, the Friends' Mini Book Sale is always well-stocked in the entrance to the Library.

The Friends will be taking a much-deserved break from accepting book donations, and will return in the fall.
