Courtesy of Delta Heritage Society. This May the Archives hosted a practicum student from the University of the Fraser Valley. Thanks to the efforts of our student, a photo album from the 1990s documenting every church in Delta is now available on the Archives database. Please feel free to take a look online by searching its accession number 2026-025. We recently completed scanning and description for the family records donated by Joan Van Blerk. Joan came from the Grant family of Vancouver that settled in Delta in the mid-20th century. Her uncle ran Grant’s Litho and Printing in Ladner, which operated out of the old B.C. Telephone office. Her family had owned a cabin at Point Roberts and later moved to Boundary Bay permanently, likely why Joan herself also chose to reside in the Boundary Bay neighbourhood. Take a look at this collection online, especially if you have an interest in the Boundary Bay community. The Archives has also undertaken a small oral history project, interviewing some of the long-serving volunteers of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society about their volunteer experiences. Look forward to these being available online to listen to in July. DE1993.36, Snow Goose Decoy. Courtesy of Delta Heritage Society. Let’s talk about decoys! Hunters use waterfowl decoys to attract real birds by creating a false sense of safety. Decoys are placed in the water to entice birds into landing in a specific target area. This decoy is meant to look like a snow goose feeding. Carved by Bert Lamdin, a New Westminster resident who hunted in Delta. His family has a strong connection to our community, as his mother Lillian Lamdin was a member of the Endersby family from the Strawberry Hill area of North Delta. Bert and his friends hunted snow geese on Brunswick Beach and Westham Island. In total, he carved six snow geese decoys. Come by the Douglas J. Husband Discovery Centre to see Bert’s decoy on display. Delta works with great cultural community partners. Visit their websites to find out what they are up to. Questions?
