NEW! Creativebug: Arts & Crafts Video Courses

Free access with your Bowen Library card!

Creativebug is a resource for those interested in learning a wide-range of arts and crafts, from beginner to advanced, through video tutorial classes. For all ages, with over 1000 classes.

Class topics include:

  • Painting (oil, acrylic, watercolour)
  • Sewing
  • Crochet
  • Amigurumi
  • Jewelry
  • Origami and papercraft
  • Food (cakes, canning, preserving)
  • Leather work
  • Skincare products
  • …and many more!

Set-up a daily challenge, craft with a friend, and watch Creativebug TV to learn about your favourite artists and studios.

NEW: Community Integration Services Drop-In

Tuesday, February 27 | 11 am-2 pm

Drop in at the Bowen Island Library and get help accessing supports regarding housing, health, services, finances, and more.

Community Integration Specialists help people at risk of or experiencing homelessness:

  • Access government programs
  • Get connected to services and supports, such as cultural, health, and community supports
  • Work with governments, community partners and agencies
  • Provide support during critical transition points, such as leaving a medical or corrections facility

Community Integration Specialists help people access financial support and community resources, including:

  • Assistance applying for income and disability assistance
  • Funding for urgent needs, such as food or clothing
  • Case management
  • Housing support referrals
  • Health support referrals

This drop-in service (as well as the WorkBC Career Advisor) is available at the Bowen Island Library, from 11 am-2pm on these Tuesdays in 2024:

  • February 27
  • March 26
  • April 23
  • May 28
  • June 25

Movie Night: Chevalier

Thursday, February 22 | 6 pm

Join us for a screening of Chevalier (2022).

Based on the incredible true story of composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. The son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, Bologne (Kelvin Harrison Jr. in a tour de force performance) rises to improbable heights in French society as a celebrated violinist-composer and fencer, complete with an ill-fated love affair and a falling out with Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton) herself and her court.

Directed by Stephen Williams. In English.

Drop in, no registration required. Come a little early and grab a comfy chair—film starts promptly at 6 pm, and runs 107 minutes. Rated PG.

Tuesday, February 20 | 9:30-10:15 am

In this program Kallie George will discuss how she was inspired to become an author of childrens' books.

Participants will get a glimpse at the writer's process through her notebooks, story-based crafts, and inspiration. Recommended for grades K-3.

This is a live event streamed on YouTube and moderated by library staff. Watch from your device at home or show it at your school.

Book Donation Days are Back

Sundays, February 11 & 25 | 10 am-12 pm

Donations of clean, good condition used books can be brought to the Bowen Island Library Annex starting at 10:00 am, going until volunteers' bins are full (no later than 12:00 pm).

The volunteers are especially looking for novels and children's books at this time, but other types will be considered.

A Friends of the Library volunteer will pre-screen your donations while you wait and will accept those that meet donation guidelines. Donors will need to take back any items that do not meet the guidelines.

We thank everyone who donates books in support of the Bowen Library!

Teen Advisory Group

Saturday, February 10 | 1:30-3:00 pm

The Teen Advisory Group (TAG) is for teens who want to make the Library better for themselves and for other teens! Joining TAG gives you a voice in what happens at the Library!

  • Suggest items for our teen collections
  • Suggest programs and services you’d like us to offer
  • Participate in library and community activities
  • Earn volunteer hours and boost your resume

Membership is open to anyone 13-18 years of age living on Bowen Island. Registration is not required and drop-ins are welcome!

Movie Night: Rockfield

Thursday, March 28 | 6 pm

Join us for a screening of Rockfield (2020), a documentary about Rockfield Studios, a farm and live-in recording studio in Wales, where some of the greatest bands and musicians of our time have recorded some of their biggest hit records. Musicians include Ozzy Osbourne, Robert Plant, Tony Iommi, Dave Brock, David Bowie, Jim Kerr, Kingsley Ward, Charles Ward, Ann Ward, Lisa Ward; bands include Black Sabbath, Queen, Stone Roses, Oasis, and Coldplay.

Directed by Hannah Berryman. In English. Rated 14A.

Drop in to meet with Janice, a WorkBC Career Advisor, in the Library Flex Room, and get one-on-one help with resumes, cover letters, interviewing, job searches, insights on the job market, career and education advice, and more.

Janice is very likely to be able to see you right away! This drop-in service is available at the Bowen Island Library, from 11 am-2pm on the 4th Tuesday of the month, until June 25.

French Connections

Saturdays, February 3 & 17 | 10:30 am

Drop in and join us to practice your conversational French, and get to know other French language learners on Bowen Island! The focus is on beginner and intermediate speakers, but all levels are welcome.

We meet 10:30-11:30 am, but participants are welcome to stay longer if the conversation is still rolling!

This session meets Saturdays, February 3 & 17, March 2, 16 & 30.

A free, 30-minute drop-in program of stories and songs for 2-4 year-olds and their caregivers!

Babytime is a free, 30-minute drop-in program of songs, books, and rhymes for babies 0-18 months and their caregivers! Starts at 11:30 am. Drop in and join us when you can.

At 12 pm, stay for a casual baby & caregiver social hour in the Annex.
